Torn up throwing away an old grill....

I had a really hard time parting way with this grill. I purchased a Weber in 1997 shortly after purchasing this house. A friend once told me, a Weber is the last grill you buy.

After about 7 years it needed new burners and heat defectors, I replaced with SS parts. Those never needed replacing again.

About 5 years ago the base started to fall apart with rust, the grill itself was fine so I kept using it. Last year my wife was on my case to just let it go, but it worked fine!! The base was getting bad, I hatched a plan to build an outdoor kitchen to throw the grill on.

Reality hit, I am too busy with my day job to do that.

So I went to buy another Weber to replace it. Red flag.. it was the same price at Home Depot. How could that be? 24+ years later same price, does not compute.

I happened upon a Grill store and saw a modern Weber all rusted out in front, I asked the owner what was up with that? He informed me Weber is now made in China and not American made anymore, they also cheaped out on the entire grill and it just does not hold up. He said he stopped carrying them due to the lack of quality.

He carries Napoleon Grills, American made 15 year warranty. A comparable grill to my Weber was about $200 more. Which made sense to me. I told him I would think about it and come back. Then I thought, I have not bought a gas grill since 1997 I am going to not only get a better one, but upgrade too. So I purchased one almost $600 more then my 1997 Weber and I LOVE that grill.

So long my good friend, you served me well, thousands of meals cooked on you, supported us through 3 hurricanes when power was out. You served us well, I dragged it to the cub after this pic, it was gone in 2 hours. I had a really hard time tossing this grill, it actually sat in my back yard for 2 weeks because I did not want to just toss it.

Getting used to the new tool. It has a little learning curve but I am getting the hang of it and damn, I am really getting to love this new grill. The side burner hits 1800° in 30 seconds, amazing tool to sear your steaks with.

I never imagined throwing away an inanimate object would be so hard to do.

Dude, you just made me go outside.

I'm not sure how many years I had this. Then we downsized into an apt and I gave it to the daughter and her husband. He used a kettle Weber that he had so ours sat in their garage for about 8 years. When we bought the house last year, I got my old grill back. The enameled flavor bars were all rust, so I bought some stainless replacements. It's still kicking.

The new grill looks nice. When we moved in I checked out the stuff at HD. I was not impressed by the quality/price ratio so figured it would be better, at least for now, to keep my old grill. We don't use it that much anyway.

Funny side story. There was an apportunity to get my new grill with SS grates at no extra charge. I told the guy, I want cast iron. He was perplexed because the SS is big money.

I have messed with lots of grills from a Kettle like tabs to my BGE. I have learned a well seasoned cast grate is the best.

The pics above without meat were from me burning it in, using crisco to coat the grates and get them good and seasoned in. 3rd meal was cooked tonight, pork chops, they never stuck to the grate.

Nice BBQ, you can't beat that warranty.
I had a Napoleon from 2004 to this past summer. I used it weekly, winter and summer. I replaced it with another Napoleon that my neighbor gave me when he moved. It's twice the size of my older one which was still working perfectly.

I'm confused.

Don't you mean $3.90? Or was that when you were young and foolish?

Interesting. The grates on mine are enameled cast iron. My process is to get the grill hot, clean the grates with a brush, then I use a part towel to wipe on some oil right before I drop whatever good I'm going to cook on the grill. I think that probably adds to the seasoning. It's pretty rare that anything sticks.

I'm lazy. I never clean it properly. I just get it really hot to kill any bacteria that may be living on it, let it cool down a bit and on go the steaks and chicken.

Yep, hot (about 450-500º) then a quick brush. There's usually not much to do since nothing much sticks. I don't cool it off. I drop the stuff on and turn the temp down. I get the nice grill marks/maillard on what I'm cooking.

Odd. Same story more or less here. Except I found a free natural gas Weber and swapped out bits last summer. I am a cheap Azz.

I had that exact same grill. It's been gone for 10 years but that photo brought back memories.

We have that same one on our deck as I write this, and still use it regularly. The cart underneath has mostly disintegrated but the doors hide that. Still works great. Recently bought another Weber for our lower deck (covered) and pretty impressed with it. Time will tell.

When we lived in Alexandria VA people had a habit of putting nice things at the curb on Sunday as bulk pick up was every Monday. Got a lot of nice things just walking the hood.

Picked up this gem about 6 or 7 years ago. It was like new and I had to put about $35 into it for the things that cover the burners to get it right. Hard to believe someone would throw this out and not make the effort to fix. I think they cost about $700 when I got this.

sizzle zone. somebody had fun with that...

nice looking grill.

i still have my old ass SS weber genesis. bums me out the burners run left to right. the new configuration of the burners going front to back makes a lot more sense to me. at least the Chinese version got that better configuration going.

I have a Canadian made Vermont Castings nat gas grill that is about 14 years old. Production went offshore after that and the quality is not there anymore.
This grill has enameled cast iron grates that have held up great (grate?) over the years.
I can see one of the burners has a hairline crack in it and the flame is more random than it once was. I do a deep clean on it once a year and even though I haven't had a cover for it since it was new, it has lasted.

The only thing I do is stand to the side when opening the bottom door, just in case some critter or slithering thing has taken up residence inside. The weather here doesn't really warrant a cover either.

I haven't bought a grill in, well ever. Got a hand me down early on. Then with every Army move, I would get one from a neighbor when their household goods were delivered. Usually the movers would break them and the Army would pay the owners for a new one. I would get their old "broken" one and fix it.

Actually sold a 'broken' one that I got from the neighbor's trash that the Army had paid for after movers broke it. I used it for a couple of years, got the Army to pay for its move to my next location, then I sold it when I got the next one from the trash.

This one I got from someone that just didn't want to fix a wear item part, so they put it out with the garbage. Cracks me up that some people can't repair anything.
