Out of the frying pan........

Into the path of an oncoming train.

Dude crashes his plane on a railroad crossing and lives only to be nearly taken out by an oncoming train.

Someone was having a bad day.

In the words of Agent Maxwell Smart....."I missed it by this much."

Wow, that guy needs to never buy a lottery ticket ever again. He'll never win as all of his luck has been used.

Sooner or later 01-10-2022 06:01 AM

The pilot was the only one using up their luck.

In this video the 1st half is the same police footage. The last half is video from a couple of guys down track and debris comes flying by them and one guy goes down. Not sure if he was dodging flying crap or was hit.

This was a question on a driver safety course I did for the insurance discount.

Do you run at the train or away from it?

Answer, at it.

I’d like to take a moment to express some gratitude for the officers that risked their own lives to save this guy.

Those guys are real heroes.

ckelly78z 01-10-2022 06:20 AM

Not much left for NTSB to inspect after that ! Find the black box a mile down the tracks ?

javadog 01-10-2022 06:25 AM

That plane probably won’t have any black boxes but it does have a pilot that can tell the NTSB what went wrong.

Was the train even trying to slow down?

Would it have mattered?

Yeah, that was a light rail commuter train, not a mile long freight train.

Apparently, the iPod FDRs will be able to record over 500 hours of flight data.

The smallest Cessna Citation that has a FDR is the 525B (CJ3), which weighs 14,075 lb MTOW. The FDR is required for commercial operational requirements in Europe. Europe requires FDR for commercial aircraft greater than 12,500 lb MTOW or 9 passengers. In the US, the requirement for FDR is only greater than 9 passenger seats.

Russian Aviation Register require an FDR for all commercially operated aircraft, regardless of size. Therefore a 172 that was to be certified for commercial operation in Russia would require an FDR.

I'll take "That won't buff out" for $1200, LeVar.

It's a double decker indicating it's a high volume line and possibly even an express so it would have been moving.

Was there a failure to notify in a timely manner whatever transit authority was in charge that there was a blockage on the track or was it just too close already.

No idea. I’m sure we will learn in due course. My only point was that these can stop faster than a mile long freight train. It didn’t look like it was on the brakes but I didn’t watch that aspect of the video that closely.

My guess is either a failure to communicate or just not enough time.

The driver of the train is going to have to deal with a lot of **** over this which if it were me I'd have done whatever possible to avoid.

Hopefully he passed the piss test.

GG Allin 01-10-2022 09:27 AM

3 seconds, by my count. Defund those scoundrels.

Those Metrolink trains are 3-5 cars. That's the line that runs from Palmdale to Union Station/ Downtown LA.

They had a crash back in 2008 in the Santa Susana Pass. Turned out to be an engineer on his cellphone not paying attention. I'm wondering if this is the same deal.

There was a stop in Sylmar/San Fernando before the train headed to Sun Valley.

I've ridden the train before, travel time between San Fernando and Sun Valley is approx 7 minutes. Seems like there would be enough time to notify.

You'd think that with all of the self driving cars and the various systems in place on a lot of cars that they could/would put something similar on those trains. They could use the adaptive cruise control. I think that they could safely skip the lane departure warning system. But, since I'm not that kind of engineer, I'm assuming it's 1 not that easy or 2 no one is willing to pay for it (probably more the latter than the former).

A930Rocket 01-10-2022 04:34 PM

Yup. It was his lucky day

Aurel 01-10-2022 05:37 PM

Thankfully his ambulance didn’t get in an accident on the way to the hospital ;).
