Law Enforcement done right:
I don't always admire our L.A. County Sheriff but he has impressed the schit out of me this time. We had a tragic murder this week of a young, off-duty LAPD officer during the course of a street robbery. It happened in an unincorporated area of south LA patrolled by the LASD, (County Sheriff Dept).
First off, they very quickly apprehended suspects who turned out to be the robbers. Then, they somehow got them to basically confess...I don't know how to explain that one. Huge leverage, I guess...security video captured the entire crime, etc. No way out and they all started ratting on each other(?) The best part by far was what the Sheriff did. We have a worthless, POS elected DA in Los Angeles right now who is the epitome of no bail/no enhancement charges/etc., so the Sheriff somehow bypassed him and got the U.S. Attorney to file on these mutts. Federal charges mean that at the best, (for them), they will spend the rest of their lives in a Supermax prison but hopefully get the death penalty. Unlike CA., where a death sentence means sitting on death row until you die of old age, the Feds will kill them and relatively quickly. This is justice. Any plea agreement would be to spare their lives and be locked in a concrete room for 23 hours a day for the next 60 years. They are all young, two are around 20. Bravo, Sheriff Villanueva!! https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-01-13/federal-prosecutors-charge-four-with-killing-off-duty-lapd-officer |
Asked at the Thursday night news conference whether the Sheriff’s Department had consulted with Gascón’s office, Villanueva said yes and called the county prosecutors’ response “not satisfactory.”
“I believe their plan was to just prosecute a simple murder with no gun enhancements, no gang enhancements, nothing,” the sheriff said. “And that really did not cover the depravity of this crime…. It should be noted that the California penal code does cover all these things. The tools are there but we need to have someone who’s willing to use them.” Murder in California generally is punishable by 25 years to life in prison. However, with a special circumstance — such as gang membership or murder in the commission of another crime — a defendant can be sentenced to life without parole. |
Once in a while, the feds are good for something. They were good for Project Exile in VA about 20-25 yrs ago too. That's where these thugs belong when the state can't get its act together. Oh, and fook Gascon. I hope he dies in a carjacking.

all available resources allocated
no limit on money manpower whatever it takes to get the cop killers but if you or I were killed, not as big of a deal to them 2 sets of rules In 2021 the city experienced 397 murders, up 11.8 percent from the 355 the previous year, and a 53.9 percent increase from the 258 in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. It was the highest figure since the 395 killings in 2007. The department also reported 1,459 victims shot in 2021. Two years before, 946 people were shot in the city. |
Speeder - I don't always agree with you --- but you are spot on and articulated my view perfectly.
My son works in local LA law enforcement and the Sheriff did an end run around Gascon. Tip of the hat to Sheriff Villanueva and you. |

My only complaint:
They only seem this motivated when one of their own is murdered! Big people vs. Little people |
LASD did an outstanding job Denis! I agree 100%!

If my information is correct, the murder was captured on video. Three of those arrested were known gang members. "Known" meaning their photos and info was on file. No doubt this as swift work, but even I could have caught them given the advantage.
Now, going around the L.A. prosecutor was brilliant. So let's not pile on and say cops get better investigations. |

Yes, it would be good to see mandatory death penalty for killers of cops, ambulance people and firemen while they are working. I know this guy was off duty and it was a robbery, but it's a bit of a sore point here in NZ where cops etc are out working and get killed by methamphetamine morons.

no death penalty in truly civilized countries.

Civilization has to punish crime or it descends into anarchy like in dystopian movies. |
Or Canada, eh...
Kidding Canada is very polite. Usually. |
