You want to hear something crazy?

I thought it was a joke when I first heard it, but the new policy at the hospital is that you wear an N95 mask with a second mask on top of it when in patient care areas.

I thought for sure the guy telling me was pulling my leg, turns out, not so much.

It is like they are getting their ideas from the Babylon Bee or The Onion.

First, I find it hard to breathe with one n95, can't imagine doubling up. Second, is this because omicron is so much more contagious than other variants? I don't think anyone knows what is going on anymore.

I suspect it's so they don't get sued. They can say "We took every precaution possible - not our fault."

Rusty Heap 01-18-2022 04:30 PM

Would two N95's = one N190 then?

craigster59 01-18-2022 04:36 PM

On film sets if we’re getting near an actor (red zone) we just add a face shield. Seems to work ok and adds safety since the masks are pretty much inefficient.

This thread might have a future on another forum.

We should have handled this like Swine Flu, ignored it, it would be gone by now.

I hear that if you're getting busy with a slutty chick, your best bet is two or three condoms!

Mrs Rocket works in an ICU. Mostly COVID patients.

I think she doubles up on every piece of PPE, masks, head cover and face shield.

Thank your Nurse wife for me bud. I have mad respect for those that do that job.

My wife is a nurse, she also doubles up.

Tobra 01-18-2022 06:32 PM

If you are going to require everyone use an N95, assuming they are fit and used correctly, what could the second mask possibly do? I could see using a face shield with a mask, but two masks

I am not talking about the ICU or covid isolation, that is different, equipment dedicated to the patient when possible.

Two masks, two face shields and two head covers, wow

wildthing 01-18-2022 06:37 PM

Yeah doubling up an N95 is useless...

I just got back from the chemo center at Scripps. They would no longer let me where my two layer cloth mask and provided me a standard surgical mask (not n95).

My son has been in UCLA Santa Monica since he came in via the ER on Wed. Not one person, not one single person seems to know exactly what the protocols are. My son is a non verbal quad so he needs someone (my wife, myself or one of his aids with him 24/7 and the hospital has no idea how to handle that.
Makes what is already a very frustrating situation even worse when you can't get the same decisions day to day from the staff.
Kill me now frustrations
He doesn't have Covid

Yes this is crazy... I really hope one day soon we'll be looking back on all of this and laughing. :(

LWJ 01-18-2022 08:22 PM

I can’t wait to laugh about this. I’m tired of it.

Just over 2 years of nonsense but it feels so much longer.

Prayers for your son, I remember the pictures you have posted over the years. I would think N95 and face shield would be more than adequate for him and his aides.

You would think they would have the protocols nailed down by now. How far are we into this by now? A lot further than the "Two weeks to flatten the curve" we were fed at the beginning.

wearing just one mask is racist

For those bemoaning the changing guidelines: please remember how scientific research works.
You start with a premise, test, then look at the data. You may have to adjust your theory.
Those who don't understand may complain you have no idea what you are doing, but clinging to false or misunderstood theories does not move your understanding forward.
It is a process. If we knew all the answers, we wouldn't be learning.
Learning is hard and frustrating sometimes.
We'll get there.

Best
Les
