the modern day musical star.
i didnt want to sully the other thread.
but it got me thinking. today's stars..sure talented. (some are debatable). but there is no doubt there is a certain look. you gotta be good looking. hell, you can hire song writers, and electronically enhance a singing voice..but looks. gotta be kinda pleasing to the eye. a good looking, young, talented, song writer, solid voice, etc. dealt all the good cards. you cannot go wrong. as a society, we want it all. sucks i cant sing

Like my dad always said (or maybe it was Ted Knight),

I’ve noticed that as well, the better looking the singer, the better the song sounds. Especially females.
I’m very shallow. |

I've always wondered at that dichotomy. Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt just two off of the top of my head.

Often the most talented people never make it big. You have to check all of the boxes Vash mentioned and then draw attention on top of that.

Auto-tune, MTV, special effects, costume changes and overall theatrics made average singers into celebrities. The song could be below average but did you see the video!!!

Ehh...I'd say it is something else that is required.
"Stage Presence". There is more to it than looks. Doesn't matter what one looks like, without good stage presence they'll be happy to see one one leave the stage. https://youtu.be/lj3iNxZ8Dww |

To disprove the theory there's Lyle Lovette. Janis Joplin wasn't exactly beautiful.

These days, many, many musical folks get popular because of their videos and their ability to entertain. These sorts have been around for quite a while, just thinking about some of the big ones and going backwards, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Culture Club (Boy George), Prince, KISS, etc.... I'm sure that there are more. I think it's a relatively new thing. There was no reason for it when the primary method of being heard was the radio and records and tapes. I suspect the proliferation of TV followed by cable and then MTV is what has really driven the current trend towards aesthetics and outrageousness. I don't think it's going anywhere any time soon.
I suspect there may still be some folks that make it due to their talent, but I'm sure they are rare. I have definitely found that there are for me two kinds of music, 1 music that I really like just for listening and 2 music that is interesting/compelling partially because of the music, but in a big way because of the video whether it be due to the person being attractive or because the video is visually interesting. For #1, I don't care if the video is good or not. I can listen to the music and enjoy it almost any time. For #2, the music probably has something, but I probably don't really want to listen to the music without seeing the video. These days, there are some very creative videos out there that are really aesthetically pleasing. There are some videos that are not exactly art, but are hard to look away from like a train wreck. And then there are artists that without all of the trappings of the video are a pleasure to watch perform. This popped up on facebook the other day, and I was curious. I couldn't look away, and pretty much any time it pops up, I watch it. I have even watched it without having the volume up. warning, language

Yeah but they were the exception that proves the rule, as they say. Most pop music and/or rock stars are physically attractive, at least if they are the front man or woman. There have been exceptions for extremely talented or charismatic singers, such as your examples and Meatloaf, but the rule stands. Lead singers have always been "a type," generally speaking.

When a song starts, if it doesn’t resonate with me in the first 15 to 30 seconds, it never will. It has to have a certain sound/beat for me that I can’t describe.
