Golf Bags-Cue cases

Interesting peek into World Champion Shane Van Boening's cue case. Seems like he carries as many cue shafts as a golfer carries clubs. Shane is hearing impaired, so bear with his responses. Interviewer Karl Boyes is a Brit..hope you understand Cockney.

Well, I carry a spare shaft for my playing cue...only one for my break cue. Hey, we do have something in common though. We both have the same bridge and use the same chalk.

In competition play, are they allowed to change cues at will?

Yes...from break to playing to jump cue at will. Unscrewing a shaft can be considered conceding the match unless referee or opponent's permission. Permission always granted should a shaft lose a tip, shatter during a forceful shot, etc...haven't ever seen permission refused. So, in a way, much like a golfer changing clubs for shots.

Every table plays differently, so players select shafts and tips to suit table conditions. Different cushions on the rail affect speed of balls off the rail, humidity can change ball speeds, etc. In televised tournament play, the TV table is usually faster than the side tables because the TV lights make the cloth dryer. Adapting to table conditions quickly is a must for top level players. They're all good shotmakers...it's the player who best controls the cueball after the shot who is the usual winner.

That said, Shane carries more shafts than most of the pros or amateurs.

I remember a player who told me once that the shot made is not as important as where the next one is lined up. (just as you said)

It's a fun sport.

In many cases, it IS the game. To illustrate, here's 11 minutes of nothing but safety shots. The object of the shot isn't to make the object ball, but to make sure your opponent can't make it. This is 9 ball, balls must be struck in numerical order...fail to do that, and the opponent gets "ball in hand", can place the cue ball anywhere he wishes. At this level, it's most often then game over.
