Egan Bernal

Those of you that are cycling fans know who he is, TdF winner, young star with a bright future.
Hit a stopped bus a couple days ago while on a training ride on a time trial bike with a group. Burst fracture of t6 with cord involvement, open patella fx, multiple femur fractures. Thru surgery, but only time will tell.
He'll be lucky to have a normal existence, let alone a career.

herr_oberst 01-26-2022 07:20 AM

That's horrible news. I saw the twitter photo where you can see the back of the bus totally caved in.

Best luck to EB and his family and team.

That poor guy has had so many broken bones in the past now this. Very sad. Rooting for him

mattdavis11 01-26-2022 08:37 AM

How did this happen? Lordy, rear-ending a bus on a bike? I can't fathom it.

herr_oberst 01-26-2022 09:11 AM

He was on a training ride on his TT bike.
This is him at the Giro:

Yeah, and they were in a group doing team tt stuff. So they were likely flying and its hard to see in that position.
Had a pickup pass me then turn right while I was on aerobars 25 years ago. Still carry around the a/c separation that created. The right hook was bad enough, but having myself in that position significantly altered my perception/reaction time.

Good news...he is out of the ICU.

It may be some time until the extent of the spinal cord involvement is known. I know what that is like and I wish him every luck.

The pic in that article looks very encouraging especially for a guy with those injuries.

From the linked article:

His moving Instagram post noted 20 broken bones, injuries to his hands and fingers, a lost tooth, and perforation of both lungs.

stevej37 02-06-2022 11:22 AM

^^^ plus two surgeries on his spine...very lucky to be alive.

greglepore 02-06-2022 01:34 PM

Turns out that after he was stabilized they found out that he not only had the thoracic fractures but also c2.
Open patella fracture, 4 compound femur fx, spine in thoracic and cervical, and he's still posting on social media. Stud.

I keep saying it, bikes should not use public roads - they need their own dedicated ones, there's plenty for all. Big airports don't share airspace with skydivers. Zanardi, too, similar...
Shoot - I don't play tennis in the middle of a freeway, hobbies need special places...

This is a crazy story. Reminds me of Marco Pantani's death even though that was vastly different circumstances.

greglepore 02-07-2022 10:15 AM

Unbelievably, he's discharged to home. Will do rehab.
Surprised there's not some impatient rehab time.

stevej37 02-07-2022 10:31 AM

That's the game at hospitals.
If you can move on crutches or walker...you're out of there.

I had a broken femur repaired with a titanium rod and they sent me home the same day as the surgery.
Worked out well.

Undoubtedly, he had plenty of PT attention as an inpatient. Also, he's an elite athlete so, is accustomed to dealing with pain associated with activity (now rehab for him). Lastly, nobody should want to spend any more time than necessary in a hospital today.

Tobra 02-07-2022 04:11 PM

If that happened to one of you guys, you would have died.

Thing about hospitals, as soon as you can leave, you should do so.
