Porsche’s are good for the soul

So I have a buddy that has always “given one for the team.” He has worked two jobs for a long while and done everything for the betterment of his family.

As he winds down his career, he noticed my Boxster and made a comment. This lead to me throwing him the keys and taking a spirited drive.

He has been on the prowl for his own after that drive.

He showed up in my driveway with a minty 03 just now and a grinning Teen son.

I told him how happy I was that he had finally rewarded himself. It is a beautiful thing. The meaning and “brass ring” nature of this car is significant to my buddy.

This makes me smile.

Thought I would share.

Good for him. Hope the teen son has the same drive (no pun) as dad.

I just drove home from work in my not-stock 930 and had the opportunity for about 5, high RPM in second gear, rolling throttle stomps and each time thought "hoooooollllllyyyyyy shhiiiiittttt" even though I've been driving this same car since 2006 - definitely good for the soul!

Great story. Best part of it was knowing this man getting a little reward for his years of sacrifice.

That's what it's all about.

Awesome! Great story. I'm glad that it ended the way that it did. I had a sinking feeling for a bit that either the wife was going to leave him or he was going to drop dead before he got to enjoy himself. Whew!

But it's a Boxster - not a real Porsche ...

I've owned seven 911s, and have only driven Boxsters a couple of times. Still, those couple of drives told me loud and clear, this is a real Porsche. Anyone who says different clearly hasn't driven one (or is a 356 owner who still thinks theirs is the only real P-Car)

I saw a retired ex company VP at someone else's retirement party a couple years ago. I know him and he knows me but we never really talked in the years we both worked here. He did give me the evil eye a few times when we met at a stop light on the way work to in the morning after I had likely passed him at triple digit speeds in my '78 280Z.

He casually told me at the party that he just bought a new 911. I was quite surprised but happy that maybe now he understood.

One time drove a 98 Boxster in very nice condition and I beat on it a little with owner in passenger seat. The feel was a whole lot like my SC. A lot of fun.

Happy for you pal.

Where did all this newfound positive sentiment come from regarding the 'hairdresser car'? I've been tossing one since 2002. Still, it only has 63K on it today. It's due for a lot of service.

Not much time for that or driving a 5 speed with 3 shoulder surgeries in 3 years.

Seriously, my wife wanted one when she first saw them and I nailed my own coffin when I sold her 356. So I bought on off a 2 year lease. Been a good car but surgeries for her as well keep it parked.

On the Boxster. I have owned a 1980 SC and a 78 930. The Boxster is so clearly part of the same driving experience. Mine is an S and may be slightly massaged for performance. It is wonderful.

As a first time 986/996 owner, you should help your friend 2 ways. 1.) Explain what the IMS issue is. If his car does not have a fairly recent replacement, convince him to do it. That ensures long time health and good fun. 2.) Keep him off both of the major 986 forums. The paranoia there will suck all the fun out of ownership,

Provably not bad advice ^^^^... Especially the IMS issue. My take is to wait for when you need a clutch, then do it. At this point, it's has either been done or nothing is going to happen. However, an upgrade is an upgrade and should be taken advantage of.
