This. Its sub-minimum wages by law.
An exception to the rule along with the salaried and contractors.
(And I agree with the comment that US restaurant wages should be like those in Europe)

I once hustled tables and did my refills etc but didn't have the persona smoothness and timing. Slow to grab customers from the front. I was always getting the register and restocking the messes left behind by other waiters. It's not easy work and I still try to tip these people well, but there were times when they didn't deserve squat. There's nothing worse than gesturing at someone watching and chatting behind the counter with a blank look.

The mandatory tip thing plus surcharges is a deal-killer for me. A $15 meal becomes $25? Negative to that. It's the company passing along their own costs.

I am "pro-tipping" having worked as a server (ant) for a number of years. No way am I tipping a fast food employee.

I am also against the tipping before the service is performed, like a pizza delivery. It doesn't seem to having any effect on the outcome of the delivery.

We have a restaurant here that includes a drive-in with curb service. No window you pull up to. Just park and the waitress comes to your window and takes your order. She stays outside the whole time and has a window herself she hands orders to the cooks inside and in return takes them from them and back to you in your vehicle.

These waitresses all have different personalities that go along with the abilities. I happily tip but enjoy tipping more to those who, in my opinion, put forth the effort.

Because I have worked as a part time waiter when I was a teacher and also a delivery driver while in college, I remember how it felt when I got a nice tip.

Ask Jarrod....;)

mattdavis11 02-08-2022 08:27 AM

The last time I left a $100 tip, was the last time. Usually it's 20% at a sit down.

I'm thinking Jarrod is too busy getting a " foot long " up his backside in prison .

berettafan 02-08-2022 08:32 AM

We can certainly hope so.

I tip family business fast food, notably taquerias where they make them in front of you and you are asking for this and that and little extra of this and more of that and they are happy to make perfect tacos or burritos. 20% is the norm because 20% is nothing to me on a $10 plate of tacos or a burrito exactly as I want them but nice for them.

It seams like people feel they are entitled to a tip even when not warranted.

I'm also concerned that they will ever even see it.

But no, I don't tip when I am considering it self serve.

Unfortunately though, their sammiches have really dropped off in quality ... but I digress :(.

I remember when 10% was considered the proper amount. I also recall when both Barney and Andy left a quarter on the table at the diner and Barney was thinking about going back and retrieving one of them :D.

Bartenders get a buck a bottled beer .... ever since it was 1.50 a bottle. If the beer is now $10 each ... then tough chit ;).

Hooters girlz used to hit the freakin' lottery at our table 3 decades ago :).

Regular FF joints where they just hand you the food (and before Covid and passing my stimuli checks along) .... naw.

I think everywhere has dropped off in quality and increased in price.

One thing that irks me about tipping for take-out: a high percentage of the time, something in the order is wrong. And you don't find that out until you're back home/at the office/etc. It's never an extra order of onion rings or a slice of cake you didn't order. No, it's always something missing. Why am I tipping for screwing up an order that got printed off an online computer program?

This ^^^

I saw a McD a few weeks ago with hourly starting north of $15 plus a $500 signing bonus (which I'm sure required some time of employment.

If I pick up from a restaurant I will tip the person getting my crap. FF -- No effen way.

I've gotten a few BBQ spare ribs tucked inside with my soy chicken wings a couple of times actually.

You should not be getting take out, ever. I've seen what you plate.;)

Some states are "tip credit" states, meaning that the tips which the owner allows workers to keep are a 'credit' toward the owner's obligation to pay minimum wage. So....if MW is $5, a worker works 10 hours and receives $50 in tips, the owner does not owe the worker any wages. Washington State is not a "tip credit" state. The owner would still owe the worker $50 in wages.

Separately, some states consider tips to be the property of the owner, who can keep them or pass them to staff. Washington State considers tips to be the property of the owner. Many of them pass the tips on to staff.

Do they know you as a tipper?

jcommin 02-08-2022 01:49 PM

I tend not to eat at fast food and I'm not crazy about bar food. It is about food quality or the lack of and price. If I go, I'm not inclined to tip at a fast food place where I place an order and I carry the food out in a bag. I don't tip at Starbucks either but I don't go there very often.

I do tip at restaurants but I usually am a frequent diner at these places. I get to know the manager/owner/wait staff/ bar tender. I tip strong because I like the service and food quality.

What I have seen is food prices up, the menus are smaller as well as the portion sizes. And I get it - everything is up and cost more. I have adjusted too by reducing the number of times I dine out. They have become more special.

Just as backstory, several years ago I was in working in Huntsville AL and stopped at the local Cracker Barrel for breakfast. The wait staff solely relied on tips as their hourly wages were very low (around $2/hr). These type of wages are usually a percentage on the minimum wage for a the respective state.

drcoastline 02-08-2022 02:39 PM

I tip cash. Rarely at fast food places unless the person is exceptionally helpful and pleasant. TIP- To insure promptness.

In fairness to the wait staff if the issues are clearly in the kitchen or out of the servers control, I will tip them properly even if I had a bad experience.

Thank you but today is a perfect example of why take out is important even though all I've been thinking about all day was night market Taiwanese popcorn chicken and sesame soba noodles. See fender inserts from a '59 DB4 below. 12 hour day to get them ready for anodizing tomorrow morning so I can overnight them so the car can be ready for Amelia Island. And they aren't done. So it's a take out night and early morning to finish the last 10%.

They know me as the friendly guy who buys a pint of their chili oil once a month and maybe who tips well. I wish I could ask them for the recipe, it's good enough for mass market. But I think it would be insulting and they wouldn't give it anyway.
