From this to this… skiing related.

My daughter at 18 months old learning to ski in the Canadian Rockies…

She had a minor setback (major wreck where she broke her pelvis skiing) in 2020… photo taken the next morning at Alberta Childrens Hospital.

A fun little club race in 2020 a couple months after her wreck…

To today - her first Giant Slalom race (for points).

She is 8 years old and finished up about mid pack for the U10 girls. The points from today’s race will follow her through her racing career (if she chooses to have one).

Unfortunately she crashed in Race 2 on Sunday and DNF’d.

Nicely done Billy. Do you still have fingernails? ;)

Bill Douglas 02-14-2022 06:15 PM

Ah, I hear the future winter Olympics calling.

Well done, she looks to be having fun.

Her crash on Sunday happened right in front of me. I was snapping pics and got the whole thing… it’s not pretty.

She is a trooper and skied the rest of the day.

Hard crashes can sure rattle you for the day... Both the kid and the parent!
My son and I were at Fernie a couple of weekends ago and we were booking to get to the far side of one of the bowls. He saw a little ramp to jump off of and caught a tip that power slammed him face first into the snow. Lucky it was only a fat lip and the snow was crusty but not hardpack!

billybek 02-14-2022 08:09 PM

Let me know if you are at Norquay on a Sunday. That is where we are at most weekends.

unclebilly 02-14-2022 08:35 PM

My son is racing at Norquay in a couple weeks. It will be a Sat / Sun race.

I’ve actually never skied there before.

Good times!

A ski buddy of mine was the fastest 11 year old in Massachusetts circa 1977.

It’s good to have a brag point.

What a great looking and tough little girl. When that accident happened, I was in Calgary and you were more then nice enough to lend me your garage to fix the injector leak on my truck even with you in the children hospital. Great to know that she's on track and back into racing again.

Hey, I skied Norquay 20 years ago. You guys have so many world class runs within an hour or two away.

Ski crash related. That's my son's (new this winter) right ski after our mountaineering day. Luckily only the ski is hurt. He finished the downhill to base.

Nice angulation. Kids these days learn the right way and don't have to unlearn all of the bad habits us old people learned.

Telemark/freeheel, with its (if you're doing it right) inside ski/back foot focused turn finally broke me of those 1980s habits.

Racing was fun-ish, but also it was a grind and led to the worst grades I'd ever gotten in college - but if you can learn to turn where they want you to you'll forever be better at turning where _you_ want to.

unclebilly 02-15-2022 07:47 AM

George K - they might warranty that ski. Reach out to the manufacturer. They should not fail like that.

GeorgeK 02-15-2022 08:10 AM

Uncle, I am not so sure. He did hit a rock that was just below the fresh powder surface - pretty hard.

I can always write them, won't cost much.

Edit: yeah, states on their page:
What is Not Covered

Any problem resulting from impact, misuse, abuse, or neglect. This includes but is not limited to boxes, rails, and rock damage.

speeder 02-15-2022 09:26 AM

Yep, that’s just bad luck on that ski. The good luck is that your son is ok…much bigger deal.

GeorgeK 02-15-2022 09:54 AM

Speeder, Amen
There are worse places to destroy a ski...

She won first place for U10 girls overall.

Norquay depending on where they setup the course can be super steep and fast. Congrats getting the kids skiing! I started at Paskapoo :) Then raced there and Sunshine as a teen, good times!
