If you need inspiration to learn guitar or mandolin...

This ain't it. You'll never get this good. I know. I've been trying for 40 years. David Grisman is a genius on the mandolin, and Tony Rice's guitar playing is phenomenal. Enjoy.

This was a video I posted in the 'What are you listening..." thread. It features the Jarocho Harp, popular in the music from Veracruz. It is featured on Los Lobos's "Saint Behind The Glass" on their Kiko album.

The other instrument, the smaller guitar, is a Jarana Jarocha. Played very percussively with a piece of cow horn, also featured in Veracruz music. These guys are amazing, real pros......

Lindley on the Oud, and the Bouzouki(sp?)

My problem with David Lindley since his evolution from El-Rayo-Ex is that I'm not sophisticated enough as a listener to appreciate all of what what he's doing... I need a simple melody somewhere that I can tap my toes to.

When Marty Stuart first began to play with Lester Flatt's band in 1972, he was 14 years old. Others from that era were pretty good too including Earl Scruggs. Some were thought to be better than Stuart. Some were more prolific. Bill Monroe, Tiny Moore, Adam Steffey..... But I'm not convinced anyone was better than Stuart, who was also a butt-kicking guitarist.

Marty Stuart:

I saw Uncle Dave at Matilija Junior High School auditorium in Ojai way back when for a fundraiser. He was great and played all kinds of string instruments, both the Oud and Bazouki. The only El Rayo Ex song he played was "Quarter Of A Man" and I think it was on the Oud.

I'm a fan of anyone who can change stringed instruments like I change socks. I have a tough time going from 6 to 4 string much less weird tunings and all that other good stuff

My other love is a pedal steel guitar, which I cannot play but greatly admire those who can.....

Caught him playing at a local brewery several years back. He was really supporting the younger musical talent, I don't think he was even listed on the roster. It was just like nonchalantly ..".oh..ok... David Grisman showed up" I grabbed my camera and took this -

Tony Rice is also someone who I appreciate more and more as time goes by. Just perfection.

I'm also big fan of John McGann and Mark O'Conner. Here they are with some students at his school back a while ago. Imagine being one of those kids! There's a ****eload of future music talent here!

edit- if this site crashes during this thread, I'm gonna be po'd...dont crash now!

^^ Wow. Crazy good. I saw Marc O'Connor in his debut gig with the Davis Grisman Quintet in '78 when he was 17 years old, at the Keystone in Palo Alto. Grisman introduced him to the audience as an amazingly talented young kid. And he was!
