New MacBook Air won't accept OpenOffice!

Being a cheapskate I have been using OpenOffice for years! New MacBook Air won't accept! Anyone found a free MacBook Word processor that will save files in Word format in case you want to share them w "normal" people?

Why won't it accept OO?

I don't prefer Pages, but it does work and it will save files to Word format.

Brand new os sucks

Tishabet 03-02-2022 01:29 PM

Maybe time to switch to Google Docs?

dennis in se pa 03-02-2022 01:35 PM

Ok, so you "convert" them when necessary in Pages. Easier to use OO.

It looks like there may be two other options, LibreOffice and FreeOffice. I don't know anything about either one.

Are you running into an issue where MacOS tells you that the maker of OpenOffice can't be verified or something like that?

Yes

Go to the security and privacy settings and "allow files downloaded from " section, and click "open anyway."

Unless I'm a few OS behind.

I'm mostly uninformed as well, but it seems like OpenOffice has been "depreciated" and LibreOffice is still pretty solid, though even it's now acting strange on my PC. I can print to a .PDF but I can't simply print to my USB Brother laser printer. I'll update it before I give up though. I have a WFH rig from work with every last MS toy but there are rules...

iOS for phones/iPads seems to work for me (especially if someone else is paying) - for the rest, not so much satisfaction given my last decade of experience.

Oh, eff the cloud too. Adobe wants to go there with Photoshop, and they already took away my standalone Lightroom. Clouds are for shaking my cane and yelling at, not for my data.

Google Docs works well on my Mac... but I think that's the paid version from work.

I have Microsoft office for my MacBook. Got annoying converting a pages to word and the format being all messed up...

Yep, I'm no fan of apps in the cloud. Let me buy an app on a CD/DVD and install it on my machine so it'll work with AND without Internet connectivity.

Yep, I've got Pages, Numbers, etc..., but I also bought Office for Mac. I understand that there are some things that don't work as well in this version, but for my existing docs and anything that I've needed to do since I switched from Windows, the Mac version of Office has worked fine.

The latest OS behaves exactly the same with respect to unsigned app installs as I dunno, the last 5-6? versions?

dennis in se pa 03-03-2022 03:26 PM

That option is not available in the new OS! No more MACS for me!

Gogar 03-03-2022 07:29 PM

Find the program on your computer (in the applications folder or whatever) and right click on it. When the drop down menu shows up, chose "open."

then every time after should be normal.

That's really weird, because I think the new version is 12.x which is Monterey, and that link that I provided is a link on Apple's own website that says that it's good for 12.x/Monterey.

Dennis,

Macs are not garbage simply because you can't figure out how to open your freeware.

It'll get sorted! Here or somewhere
