Synthetic Fuel for ICE Cars
It seems Porsche and Mahle are working on a clean fuel derived from CO2 that work perfectly in current ICE powered vehicles while producing far lower emissions (no oil needed). Long way to go, but conceptually, quite interesting.
I watched a few YouTube videos and noticed something interesting. Bias. Several videos seemed aimed at explaining why synthetic fuel will be inferior to EV’s. They mentioned the environmental impact of building refineries and transporting the fuels. They neglected to mention the same impacts from battery production, distribution and disposal. Seems an interesting topic. Hopefully not political but the obvious EV bias in those videos makes me wonder. There is already a robust fuel distribution network around the globe. 115,000+ gas stations in the US that can easily pump e-fuel. Yet there are precious few charging stations and charging an EV takes much longer than filling your tank. So, what say you? Can synthetic fuel (e-fuel) save the ICE and appease the environmentalists?

Porsche started that process a while ago and it seems to slowly be gaining speed . I applaud them for the effort . One of the big knocks against EV ( and there are many ) is the lack of infrastructure .
With gas stations/pipelines/trucking already in place for liquid fuel all that changes ( in theory ) is that you are pumping bio vs petroleum based fuel . In my opinion a very solid way to go . The big hurdle is how do you produce the bio fuel in enough volume to replace conventional gas ? When you solve that you are in . If/when it becomes the replacement fuel of choice it's then a matter of competition to set the price . Price will be a huge factor in this being a success . I wish Porsche and their partners success in this endeavor. It truly could be a game changer but there are many hurdles to get over . I really think current fuel companies HAVE to be involved for it to be a success . They are part of the solution and can't fear bio production . |
