2010 Lexus IS250 92k, ext warranty worth it?

Picking up a IS250 from my tenant who is moving out of country. It had an extended warranty for 5 years/100k from 9/21. Unfortunately, his wife already made the move out of country and the warranty co was unable to charge her Visa, and unable to contact her. I saw the contract and it was $3600 or so. I went to my CU yesterday and they could get me a 12 mo warranty for $1700. So, the Lexus one was a deal. However, is it even worth it? I mean it is a Toyota and they are dependable as hell.

12 Mo for $1700, I don't think it is worth it, as long as the car was properly maintained. A quick search on the web should tell if there are any common problems.

I’ve taken 2 LS’s over 200k. Had to buy a radiator for one of them. Save your $1700.00 and enjoy your Lexus.

12 year old car with 92,000 miles isn't great, but being a Lexus helps a lot. I'd go without it. A 5 year/100,000 mile service contract from 6 months ago for $3,600 sounds too cheap- likely a crap service contract. The car is probably too old to get anything decent. You could try calling CNA to see if they will cover that car and if there's a local dealer that sells it. I'm certain the dealer would need to inspect the car.

You misunderstand me. From an extended service contract point of view it's not great.

Thanks. I was thinking it is a freaking Toyota, it shouldn't break. That said, I had an 04 RX330 that I bought an ext warranty for that covered the shocks and some other stuff. I made out on that. However, the Lexus after service is awesome. Eventhough the RX was 10 years old, they did a warranty replacement on my HID headlight assembly, and later on, they replaced the entire dash.

My simple philosophy:
Never buy an extended warranty for ANYTHING.
Never take a car to the dealer for reoairs after the warranty expires.

Invest the money instead, you'll likely make out better in the long run.

It's a Lexus.. fuhgedaboudit. And typically those extended warranties come with some cost at the time of service. Many times there's a minimum or a deductible. I was enticed by the Ford certified pre owned warranty when I bought my truck. Had to bring it in because my brake controller wasn't working... "that'll be $150" HUH??

Only time I bought an extended warranty was when I purchased a Dodge Intrepid. The years before and after the one I bought had transmission issues. Somehow miraculously for one manufacturing year they fixed the transmission? I don't think so. The transmission repair more than paid for the cost of the extended warranty plan.

My wife's 2001 Lexus (around 200k miles) ES 300 that I bought new does not have nearly $1700 worth of repairs since I bought it. One set of brakes and shocks...and a tube of sealant when the back window started leaking a little. Just tires and oil (and tires last forever on it...replace every 8-10 years, needed or not). My daughter's 2004 IS 300 has even more miles and has about the same number of repairs and she drove that like a maniac. Unless their cars have changed significantly, they are bulletproof.

I would only be concerned if I thought it had been abused (oil never changed or raced).

An extended service contract is insurance. Sure, they make something on it, but when does that not take place? You have to judge the car, the price, and the coverage.

I sold a 2019-2020 Suburban with low miles and an 8 year/plenty of miles warranty was only $1,900. The guy passed. Foolish IMO. I've seen decent Mercedes' and the factory service contracts are $8-10K. Yikes.

I leased a 2004 WRX for 42 months (lease special) and the guy gave me a 4 year service contract for cheap so he could have better sales percentage numbers. That damn car needed a few things right after the warranty expired. I bought a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 with 70K miles on it years ago and put a 4 year warranty on it for cost at $3,200. Got it to pay for $12,500 worth of stuff within a year. I sold Volvos for the last 12/13 years and after talking to the service manager, who told me customers come out ahead 100% of the time always recommend them. It's peace of mind. Labor rates in CA are $200-250/hour.

$1,700 for one year sucks. But let's say it was for 3 years. Don't you think you're going to get a good chunk of that back on something(s)? Then your cost is just the difference. In exchange for peace of mind, I'll take it. Toyotas had a stretch where they were replacing V6 engines left and right. Certain Hondas have had rough patches. I bought a CPO "wrap" warranty for my 2017 Mirai. It was cheap and now it's paying for an entire interior overhead light assembly.

According to my tenant, a new tranny was installed last year, along with new tires and brakes in October. The 2.5 motor has a timing chain so that is good.

Looks like the service contract was needed before. Not now, of course. It’s a Toyota!

Before I buy a car, I always join forums to get an idea of what issues may come up. The forum for my 2016 ES350 is one of the most uneventful ones. Pretty much rock solid mechanically.
The 2010 IS250 does have one issue that the ES line doesn't, carbon on valves.
