We won't have 'Lewis Hamilton' to kick around anymore.

https://www.crash.net/f1/news/998383/1/hamilton-changing-name-include-mother-s-surname-larbalestier

'Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has announced he is in the process of changing his name to incorporate his mother’s surname, Larbalestier.

'Asked whether he would race with his new name at this weekend’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Hamilton replied: “Hopefully soon, I don’t know if it will be this weekend, but we are working on it.”'

This is just another strange thing from him. Until now, he rarely if ever spoke of his mother, let alone acknowledged that she is white (gasp). He certainly didn't mention her in the last couple of years while he was kneeling.

The thing I read that was so odd was him saying he didn't understand why women take their husband's name and lose theirs. Just now pondering that is he???

Kind of the Prince (purple rain Prince, not royalty) of racing, isn't he? Tons of talent, but off in the head.

GH85Carrera 03-14-2022 10:57 AM

He has the right to have whatever name he wants. Next he can add in his grandparents names and make it a 6 name hyphenated name.

I am really surprised he has not tried the one name only routine. Like Elvis or the Rock.

McLovin 03-14-2022 11:05 AM

Yes, so disrespectful to his grandmother.

He's probably been upset since losing his lawsuit against the Hamilton watch brand for name infringement. ;)

Big E wearing a Hamilton long before Lew was born. Gosh, maybe even before Lew's dad was born! Gotta hurt to get that one thrown out of court!

Holy jeez, I had forgotten about that nonsense. Laughed so hard when I read your post.

Sometimes I wonder if he does these strange things to try and remain relevant/in the public eye. Lost WDC so went on sabbatical then announced, "I'm back".

Or the jillions of times he interrupts interviews with other drivers, which usually occurs when he isn't on the podium.

Or when he gives a plug for another driver and anoints them as a future WDC.

It seems likely the name Larbalestier, being that of landed English and French gentry, is a name inherited from former slave owners. Historically he's been outspoken in wanting to cancel such things, but I guess either this is different or he didn't think it through properly.

Hamilton may well have the same status, albeit possibly a name given to a slave by his owner.

not going to get rid of the hamilton
name he will just add another name
to his existing name to make
it really long like all the phony
self-important types do

when he was younger he did and said dumb stuff
mercedes and toto assigned him handlers
to control the media and him and it worked really well
almost everything he did and said was
filtered and scrutinized and rehearsed
but he is getting too big and important to listen
the wheels could come off soon

You do know that his mom is full-on WASP, right?

His dad Anthony, who raised him, is descended from people in Greneda, which is just off the coast of South America.

Tervuren 03-14-2022 12:59 PM

I thought he left Mclaren because they were too controlling of his life, and Mercerdes offered him the ability to speak out/act out.

As I said earlier, I don't get the timing of this. He's never really acknowledged his mother before, and certainly not her race. He always spoke about how he grew up poor and with his father, even if it was a bit of a stretch about the 'poor' aspect.

So why now? What is the angle? I'm sure there is one. He spent the last few years in protest, has that now become passe?

rusnak 03-14-2022 01:12 PM

Instead of kneeling for BLM, I think he's going to lie on his back with his legs splayed out.

ltusler 03-14-2022 06:33 PM

Really could not give less of a ....

flatbutt 03-14-2022 07:32 PM

It's fortunate that he's not a ball player...he'd never get all of that onto the back of a jersey. I wonder if his Dad feels dissed?

red 928 03-14-2022 10:05 PM

according to news reports he is
changing his name to
Lewis Carl Davidson Larbalestier Hamilton
Or
Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton Larbalestier
he is NOT getting rid of the hamilton name

or the many less than flattering
moniquors he has obtained over
the years
