Is that Seahawk out there with his boat trying to pull it? :D

cabmandone 03-15-2022 04:21 AM

I think it's rnln giving his new Boston Whaler a stress test.

asphaltgambler 03-15-2022 04:30 AM

Seriously...was the captain asleep at the helm? It's not like a car going down the road @60 mph and rums off the onto the shoulder. That thing is slow, huge...

I wish!

Stuck in Craighill Channel just north of Annapolis.

There will be a few job openings at Evergreen!

They all carry charts showing depths...don't they?
Or is it a case of not using them.

KFC911 03-15-2022 04:43 AM

^^^^ Don't know about the C. Bay, but here in NC the depths, routes, etc. are dynamic and change all the time. Big azz ships and loaded barges need Brembo brake upgrades too :D!

I did a tour as an Air Boss on an Amphib, which had a huge "sail area" like the container ships.

I qualified as Officer of the Deck, Underway and had my own watch section.

You are correct, the ship, while huge, is slow...it is all about navigation and, oddly, staying ahead of the ship, especially in confined areas with wind and any sea state. Channels are clearly market and depths are known on charts. The route buoys are also very visible.

The only time I made a mistake was bring the ship into the pier in Bahrain. The transit is fairly difficult but everything was going well until we got in close to our assigned spot on the pier. I lost the bubble: strong winds and my relative inexperience caused me to get way behind the evolution, so much so the XO took the deck.

Much to my relief, btw. XO was great and so was the CO.

But the Evergreen's crew should be so much better - it will be interesting to follow.

Any Porsche's on it? :D

cabmandone 03-15-2022 01:15 PM

What they need to do is one of those light shows like the dancing X-mas light displays. Make it a temporary tourist attraction.

This is why you never triple dog dare the captain. Sh.t always goes wrong.

That or Captain to a deck hand, "If you think you can do a better job!...."

T77911S 03-16-2022 05:16 AM

when ships come into harbor a local harbor captain gets on board and navigates the ship.
if i am not mistaken.... so i dont think its evregreens fault.

GH85Carrera 03-16-2022 06:28 AM

It must cost the shipping company a ton of money to get stuck, and unstuck, and then arrive late. Just astonishing that it happens to the same company. Of course if it had been some other company, it likely would only be local news.

Usually when a ship arrives in the upper bay,a bay pilot is taken aboard to guide the ship into the proper channel.

stevej37 03-16-2022 09:04 AM

^^^ If that's the case...the bay pilot is doing a helluva job. :D
