Northern pike are not the same. Fast nasty bastids with teeth. We caught some a big as your leg. Used a chain mail glove to get your lure back
|
^^^ Yes...and northern pike taste is nothing like walleye.
When I was very young...I spear-fished pike with my G'pa. He always said that they were not worth much for eating. Blue-gills and perch were his favorites. |
I’ve caught so many walleye that I don’t care if I ever see one again. Such a boring fish to catch. Well, hunting for them is fun but once on, they are as lazy as a lake trout
One thing I’ve never done is eaten one and I need to fix that |
This was pretty close to the state record but I tossed it back

My G'pa was a smart fisherman. The days that we went fishing, he would bring scrap pieces of fat and gristle from the night before meal. Chicken or beef....didn't matter.
He would load the pieces on hooks and line it to a board and throw them into the lake. We would fish for blue-gills and when done would load up the boards with the meat. Almost every one of them would have a snapper or box turtle hooked to the bait. A well place axe hit would split the shell and give him enough meat for the next meal. |

The pike is an esox |
Gawd I hate being in the high desert (well at least w.r.t. the fish counter) as we get Kroger's best(?) frozen chinese/singaporian seafood.
Funny comment on mackerel above. It's the "trash fish" on the nigiri menu for sushi but it's my favorite. OK, amber jack actually is, but I almost never see that for sale but for one place in Dublin CA. I really want some fresh mackerel, unpickled, to play with. I imagine it's awesome cooked over charcoal... |

They are outstanding. |
Prefer Perch, but have caught many walleye in Erie and Canada--usually jig fishing off/near the bottom.
Yes-Northern Pike are a whole 'other beast--more similar to Muskie than Walleye.--they love Spoons and Rapalas. |
Crappie .... that's whatcha wanna eat imo. But some of y'all's fishies are just alien to me :D
|
Got my wrist twitching with this thread. About 8 weeks until a week long Canadian fly-in trip. About the only place that I ever chase wallys these days. Lots of catching & releasing until it's time to grab dinner.(Kill it to Skillet) Pike fishing is also excellent with lots of 36" plus in the course of a week.
Both are pretty toothy species. You will only make the mistake of lipping one once. Think today's rain is a good reason to sort some tackle and start fantasizing the first wally tug. |
