Why aren't deep well sockets as deep as they used to be?

Used to be able to buy a 6 point deep well socket where all six points extended all the way down the inside. Today they all stop about half way. Who is the genius that thought this was a good idea. I drove all over today (HF, Lowes, Menards, Rural King) looking for a 19 and a 21mm deep well impact socket for taking lug nuts off my truck and cars. My F250, Taurus X, and Fusion all have those wonderful chrome cladded lug nuts. None of my deep well socket will go all the way on. I hate not having a the proper socket so now I'm driving myself crazy trying to find a true deep well socket!

They cost more to make them that way.

cabmandone 03-25-2022 10:11 AM

^^^
But they FIT where the new style that stops about half way down the socket doesn't fit on my truck lug nuts.

Try to chase down a snap-on truck? $$$ tho. Just a guess,

Scott Douglas 03-25-2022 10:16 AM

Sorry, I didn't answer your question did I.
Some bean counter probably got a bonus for coming up with a cost savings by making them short.

How's that?

Our whole country is getting more shallow everyday, sockets are a minor part of the problem. :D

The deeper the socket the stronger the steel needs to be. Strength = cost.

Or maybe it's a 59 ounce orange juice container kind of thing.

I'm heading to Van Wert to a store that sells S&K. I'm going to have a look at what they have to offer. I just need sockets that fit the lug nuts properly. These chrome clad lug nuts get damaged easily and I'd rather one one that fits the entire length of the lug nut. I'll report back!

Scott Douglas 03-25-2022 10:23 AM

Good luck!

Good luck. Also, buy a pair of panty hose. A trick is to use panty hose nylon to not mar the lugs...

Shrinkage my brother, shrinkage

URY914 03-25-2022 10:39 AM

Maybe your nuts are too big?

herr_oberst 03-25-2022 10:45 AM

Find a used tool store in your area.

Pawn Shop will have them or a flea market used tool booth. They may not look pretty but they will fit.

fastfredracing 03-25-2022 10:57 AM

Snap on are made the same way, I am guessing they are stronger this way? I have some older sockets that are the droids you are looking for . still really deep the whole way down .

good idea...'specially now that Fred shot down my snap-on thought. Also, used tools on ebay? craigs list? For what it's worth, my not impact made in USA Craftsman sockets are full length. Not sure if the same applies to impact tho.

(edit) A gamble, but:

That's what she said

Well, 12 miles to Van Wert S&K dealer... NOPE. another 8 miles to my brother's house because he said he bought a box of tools from a family friend that might have what I'm looking for.... NOPE. Back to a friend that owns a tractor dealership to look at his Mac and Snappy.. NOPE... NOPE... Damn bean counters ruined deep well sockets I tell ya! But my friend did hook me up with his Mac tool distributor who said he has what I'm looking for and a 21.5mm for when the lug nuts swell. I'll know more next Thursday. It's a mission now.

And great idea to those who suggested a flea market. That'll be on the list for this spring!

My USA made Craftsman 3/8 drive ( I don't have 1/2" in Craftsman) are all full well. I went to Ace Hdw and looked at Craftsman... NOPE... so I went and bought a 12 pack.

I bought six point deep well impacts at Advance Auto not long ago. 19, 21, 22MM.

They fit over the lug nuts just fine but I'll check in the morning to see how deep the internal hex goes down in there.

Made in China today and not close to the quality of the old USA made Craftsman...
