Yo Seahawk

Paul, some time ago you mentioned that you'd found someone to repair your (grandfathers?...can't quite remember) WWII field watch.

Just curious..was it ever done?

It is there now.

He has a one year back log....it may be a while. Worth it, however.

Slight correction: the watch was issued to my Grandfather who was a Warrant Electrician in the Navy.

He owned a car and electrical repair shop in Oakland and became a Warrant after Pearl Harbor. He was 44.

He helped outfit and commission the USS Breton, CVE-23: https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Breton_(CVE-23)

His ship was in the looks department, to be kind, an ocean going mud fence.

He served on her the entire time she was in the Pacific during the war.

Not 'zactly a beautiful escort carrier, was she?

I'm sure the watch will become a precious memento for you. Please do post about it when it comes back to you. It's a good story.

Is that one of the 24 hour watches? My Grandfather left us one like that. Appears to still be in working order.

It was not.

From the Watch Guy after we talked and I sent him pictures:

Your grandfather's Waltham military contract wrist watch surely has been serviced
in it's past as it was customary to have them serviced and repaired every half dozen
years or so. It may have been 50 years however since it's last proper servicing.

Nice looking watch and with the history of your grandfather, very nice indeed.

That pic illustrates why I gravitate towards the early military style watch face. The high contrast of black dial, white hands made for easy reading at a glance. Simple arabic numbers and hand design add to the functional beauty.

Our military knew what it was doing when it made the specifications for the watches it isssued.
