When I was a young'n

Ford Rangers were cheap. I priced a Lariat yesterday... A/Z plan was 41K  I took a look at F150's in XLT... 54K. Sweet mother of pearl! My friend bought his 2019 F150 XLT new for around 40K. Man! Those new headlights, front grille and larger screen are expensive!

VINMAN 04-06-2022 03:22 AM

A '22 Super Duty Identical to mine is 100k.
It's unreal !

Back when I started driving, 1982, they were around 10k. :D

flatbutt 04-06-2022 03:42 AM

HA when I was a young'un my very first car, a Chevy Biscayne straight 6 with 3 on the tree was $75. It didn't have a front passenger floor but stil.

stevej37 04-06-2022 04:00 AM

Obviously, the smart choice would be the Ridgeline for 45K. SmileWavy

My first car, a 66 Chevelle, stickered at $2660
I bought it at 5 years old for $1000

Not a fan. And the Tacoma fuel mileage pretty much cancels it as well.

What seems a bit nuts to me is that my Highlander curb weight is close to the curb weight of a Tacoma, but my Highlander has a somewhat significantly better mpg rating than the Taco.

I am hopefully on my last 1/2 ton, a 2015 Tundra I purchased new in late 2014.

I bought the version without all the electronic stuff and then added leather seats and seat heat. Love me some seat heat.

It was sub 40k.

I put a lot of miles on it early getting a business up and running. It has 134k on it and I have only put around 3k a year on it the last three years.

The Land Cruiser purchase, for 10k, was specifically to take DD miles off the Tundra so the Tundra lasts until we sell the farm. That was three years ago and I am averaging 10k a year on LC.

I hope to find a lightly used smaller truck, perhaps a Maverick, when we move to South Carolina.

I looked into the Maverick heavily. My only issue is that in a 4x4 you lose the hybrid which means you also lose some of the fuel economy. Plus, if I want one I have to wait until the order bank opens this summer which means I wouldn't take delivery until winter.

GH85Carrera 04-06-2022 05:29 AM

A buddy has an old mid 1990s F150 step side, he is going to sell. For years around here they were $2,500 for a work truck that sat outside and has wear and tear, but is a solid no rust truck. He was happily stunned when he started pricing whet they sell for now.

It will be a while.

I won't need 4x4 in South Carolina so the hybrid is in the mix. I'll be keeping the LC.

A friend of mine in PA took deliver of one a few weeks ago, 4x4. He coming for a visit in a month or so I'll get some seat time.

Nice! I'm trying to find one to drive but that's not easy! I just spec'd a Lariat, FX4, Lariat Luxury pkg, and 4000K tow package. That came in at 38K. I'm waiting to find out what my A plan price is. I might just order one and wait impatiently like Steve did for his less awesome Honda :D

That is what my buddy Barry did. I think his wait was four months, not exactly sure.

Barry is like me in terms of being over big trucks. He was a Steeplechase rider and trainer for decades and always had a 1/2 or 3/4 ton. He retired last year and pulled the plug on the bigs.

I commuted into DC yesterday, National Harbor, for a meeting and drove the Tundra for the first time in over a month in DC/beltway traffic. Great truck but my whole sight picture was off after so many miles in the LC, which is tiny in comparison.

I asked my son and daughter if they want the Tundra in a few years. Not even a nibble.

stevej37 04-06-2022 07:11 AM

Any Honda is worth the wait...:)

C&D had a review of the Rivian Rit pick-up. Throw any weight in the back and the range drops more than half.
Otherwise..it's a great truck.

Eric 951 04-06-2022 07:36 AM

2021 SD crew cab diesel with 13K on the clock 62K and the dang thing has vinyl seats no power locks and manual roll up windows

911boost 04-06-2022 08:22 AM

What is even crazier is that my buddy just got a new 2022 F350 Platinum and traded in his 2015 with 75K miles on it and they gave him $53K for it..... Of course the new one was just under $100K. He runs a construction business so he writes them off, but still.

I just put a ball joint, new steering stabilizer and a few other front end goodies on my 2012 with 115K on this clock. No way I am replacing that, going to drive it till the wheels fall off. Heck it is just getting broken in.

911 Rod 04-06-2022 08:29 AM

This is why I get my 2016 Tundra rust checked. I doubt a new truck is in my sights.

Ha! My brother was there looking into potential landing spots once he's officially retired from the USMC the end of this month.

Sea, Air and Space Conference.

I know a lot of people in the industry, I'd be happy to talk with him about post USMC options.

I do it a lot.

Best.

From when trucks were trucks --- actually work vehicles --I still do some light duty jobs with this 50 year old. Primitive compared to today but ....

cabmandone 04-06-2022 01:32 PM

Ya can't call anything with a step side bed a work truck. That's straight up truck bling!

Nice ride btw!

monoflo 04-06-2022 01:39 PM

In the day it most certainly was!! That day has has passed .... ................... so has mine,

Unfortunately

I'm tellin' ya. Find a good oil spray shop and have your truck done right. It's not that expensive.

oldE 04-06-2022 02:08 PM

Yeah, that GMC ('70?) is a close match to the '68 Chev dad had back in the day. Big 6, 3 on the tree and heavy duty suspension with 8 bolt wheels. We used to load about 1000quarts of strawberries and head to the stores in town. It was an able beast of burden, but the seats were literally PITA.

Best
Les

GH85Carrera 04-07-2022 08:03 AM

One of my former co-workers was a real farmer's daughter. Her dad ran a commercial farm, and had a crew of several farm workers. He would go to the local Ford dealer and order the most striped down cheapest possible farm truck. He would put farm truck tags on them so no road taxes.

He would order them with no heaters, or AC, floormats, or anything that cost a few cents more. He never got a radio, and one year when the radio was not optional, they just came with a AM radio, he paid the dealership to remove it. Finally when the heaters were just built in and not easy to remove he decided they could keep the heaters. He made the farm hands hose out the interiors to keep the floorboards free of inches of mud and dirt. And the truck he drove was the same way.

He would go to the dealership every 6 or 7 years and get new trucks because they all had a tough life on his farm with hired hands driving them. It got to be cheaper to replace them than fix them. He would just park the old ones in a pasture and only sell them to a hired hand for as much as he could get. My co-worker said people often stopped and asked if one of the old trucks was for sale. He was just weird about selling one of them.

Per the online calculator a $10k truck should be $33k today if it followed inflation.
Just think of all the cool features you get now for the additional $66k.

fastfredracing 04-07-2022 09:21 AM

My spring/summer side project is putting my 1978 k 25 plow truck back into regular service as my own little protest to all this madness.

A guy I flew with left the Navy got out and got an advanced degree from USC (Cali) in manufacturing and production. He was a "green field" manager for Toyota: meaning there is a field, then there is a car manufacturing facility.

He told me the absolute easiest and cheapest (in terms of production costs) vehicles are trucks. "Not even close."

Again, I love my Tundra, I am just not going to pay for a new one, or any other 1/2 ton, if I can help it.

Dealer I talked to must not want to make a sale. Forwarding the info to another dealer tomorrow to find out what my A plan price is for the Maverick I spec'd out.

You guys have me thinking about going to talk to the dealership. If I can turn a profit on my 1 year old Silverado 1500 (diesel), I think I might sell it back to them...

Will you ride a bike or walk to get around?

I'd be willing to bet you could turn a profit if you sold it outright. You'd probably break even at the dealer.
One of the things I most regret about this whole pandemic thing is not ordering a new C8 Vette. I could have made some serious bank!!
