R 134 a wow!
I bought a 30 pounder in the fall @ $135. I just got a new one this morning and had to call back to make sure they did not mess up on my invoice
$365. Almost tripled . Not sure if it is all inflation , I am sure Dupont is doing some dirty deeds as well . Some people are just going to have to roll their windows down |
Could it be a coolant discountinue?
There is a real hockey stick when different coolants are stopped. Hmm. Seems to be a manufacturing hiccup as well as discontinued. Time to speculate on 124a. https://www.epa.gov/mvac/refrigerant-transition-environmental-impacts |
$365 sounds like the Canadian price about 10 years ago, I will remember to head south when I need AC work.

Last fall could buy 90 lbs of Chinee R134 at $89 per 30 lb tank. Had to buy three though at Advance Auto. |
I just went to Ebay to check R12 prices. I've got a 30 lb DuPont tank with maybe 8 lbs in it.
I could easily retire and buy a twin engine Beechcraft with the proceeds. |
well, I used to have 3 x 100lb of 404A in my service van at all times for midnight super market emergency. Not anymore with the new prices. Any stores with major loss will get switched to R448 moving forward. If the store wont switch they either pay for the supplier to open at night or buy it to have on hand and not be in my inventory.

I'm gonna have to start making sure that people are R134a worthy.

There will be reclaimed refrigerant for years to come.
Now, if anyone is interested in a virgin 30lb tank of R-12.... |
I have an old 30 pound empty tank of R-12 that has a price sticker on it of $34. So it was once just over a buck per pound. I just looked on EBAY and it is selling for 900 to 1000 bucks for a 30 pound tank. Unless it is factory sealed, I would be really skeptical of a tank from EBAY. It could be just about anything in there.

I bought a 30 pound tank at Sam's Wholesale about 20 years ago. It was under 75 bucks, and no license needed for 30 pound tanks, only for the one pound tanks. It made no sense to me, and I knew it was going up in price and soon be unavailable for non pros at any price. It was one of my best purchases next to my 911 that has tripled in value since I bought it in 1995.

My El Camino is still running R-12. About every 10 years a compressor quits, and I end up recovering the R-12 into a tank of used R-12 and replace the compressor and accumulator, and flush everything, and recharge with the used R-12. The last time has been 10 years ago, so it is likely due soon. It is not making noise yet, or any more than a R4 style compressor makes. It will blow 40 degree air out in mass quantities on high. If the Elky sat in the sun all day in a 100 degree day, I was almost freezing cold by the time I finish my 12 minute commute home. It is all completely stock, except for an electric fan I added to the condenser to run only if the brakes are on and the compressor is running, like at a stop light or stop sign.
