Kind of an 'oh duh' moment (with this website format)
I just noticed the up/down arrows top right in the message window.
After all these years of scrolling up and down inside a tiny box, pushing that down arrow expands everything. Now there is an entire screen to type in.

Or, you can click-drag the cursor over the little chiron at the bottom right and drag the box to any size you like.
