The Datsun, er uh, Nissan Z

With all the hype over the new Z, this is a nice video of the oldschool Z, ya know the ones with funny name.

Thanks for that!

I had a 280 that I drove the snot out of it. It was rock solid and comfortable even with my 6'4" frame. Added Minilite wheels and an amped Kenwood stereo.

From MT TV channel. Short lived JDM Legends show that was pretty enjoyable.

You know, I enjoyed that show as well, but was short lived. Wonder what happened? Probably not enough drama real or otherwise to make it interesting to the masses.....

Years ago, around 2007, a woman I dated was a substitute teacher who would throw words to high school students to see if they knew the meaning. One of them was Datsun. They had no idea.

I've loved the Z for pretty much its entirety, all models (not a big fan of the 370, though).

I have an '03 350Z. They need to hurry up and bring this damn thing to market in the US so I can spend WAY too much in dealer markup on one!

First girlfriend in high school had a 280, great little sporty car BUT you had to watch out about stopping in tall grass when the engine/exhaust is very hot. She got pulled over towards the end of a long drive back from Alabama and started a grass fire under the car while waiting for hte trooper to do the paperwork for her ticket.

I’ve had 3 or 4 240Z’s and a couple of 280Z‘s. I was looking on BAT the other day and I’m blown away what nice examples are selling for.

All the cars of our youth are getting unobtaium.

I meant to post this earlier but got caught up with work. Got to spend some time with the new Z Monday night. The blue looks real good and the car looks much better in person. Still debating on picking one up later. Can’t really compare the Supra and Z, as they’re very different cars.

The "Z" cars for me: Interesting car but I never wanted to own one and its appearance in Corvette Summer didn't help the situation. There's a lot of cool history in that video. For instance I didn't know about the Mercedes Benz origins of the engine. Note it still has the distinctive hump at the front.

I want that 432 Datsun Fairlady Z in the original post with the GT-R engine. Starts at 12:30 in where they show it on the road.

Good looking car until it gets to the rear. That could be a Mustang or Charger. Too bad.

My neighbor bought this car brand new and 50 years later still owns it. He doesn't drive it anymore, so he will walk over and ask me to exercise it for him...which I am happy to do. Its a great car.

I loved my '78 280Z!

I sold it almost 20 years ago but I still remember what I did to it:

Tokico shocks
Eibach springs
Big sway bars
Poly bushings
Front and rear strut braces
15x7 wheels
240Z bumpers
Front air dam
Rear spoiler
Head light covers
'75 280Z engine
Nissan 1mm over size pistons machined down to 9.5:1
Schneider cam
Headers
280ZX intake with large TB
'83 280ZX transmission and rear end (the best ratios)

I don't have any good pictures so I've asked the current owner (an ex-coworker) for some current pics.

Here's an old one when it had turbo wheels:

Here's my '72. Bought it in 80 and drove it during college and about 8 years later sold it to offset my purchase of an IBM AT Clone with a screaming 10Mhz CPU, 512k RAM and Dual! 5.25" floppy drives! I won't admit to what I sold it for but let's just say I paid $4k for it and sold it for less than half that. The paint had suffered as it was not always garaged and we lived in AZ and in TX.
