Curse you Apple!!

In fairness I should have check but STILL! Today I went to a homebrew store to buy some ingredients for a few beers I want to make for my daughter's graduation party. I get to the store, grab my phone, flip through the apps.... WTF! IT'S NOT THERE

My homebrewing app that stored all of my recipes didn't transfer! I never even thought to check! It's an app called Wort Homebrewing Calculator and it's not on the Apple App store. I think my phone automatically backed up to my Samsung and google accounts so I'm hoping I can bring my old S5 back to life and retrieve the information. If not, my wife and kids are gonna have to find a new place to live! :D

Hahah, yeah, many apps transfer, and if they don't, there's almost always a similar app, but if you needed data out of an old app, you'll need to get that old phone running. I suspect you can get it powered up and on your wifi and it'll work fine.

I just hope one of my backups has all my recipes and not just the installed apps. It never even crossed my mind to look for that app on the phone until today. DAMMIT. That's about 10 years worth of brewing experience and recipes down the tubes if I can't get them back.

Unless you wiped your old phone, the data is probably still on the phone. Just power the old phone up.

Ouch, yeah, that's not helpful. As you said, hopefully, you can get the data out of a backup.

Does that app have a website that requires a login? Maybe you can get at your data that way.

You switched from android to iOS and didn’t check to make sure all your apps were cross platform?

If there is anyone to curse it’s the apps developer for only building for one platform.

It never even crossed my mind. I've been with Samsung for so long that upgrading was a non thought. Get a new phone, all my apps, data... transfer. It never crossed my mind that my brewing app wouldn't be available for Apple. And I don't know why I didn't have it backed up to my Samsung account!

Never would have seen this 20 years ago. “Oh ***** my life’s passion is stored on my PHONE.”

Hope you find a way,

Hope you find a way,

I know! I had a few paper backups from my early days of brewing. But "Wort Brewing Calculator" helped modify the recipes and adjust ABV and IBU when modifying so my recipes all went there. The good news, if any can be found, is that I can remember the hops, grain and yeast for the recipes. I just can't remember amounts.

The big one that I lost was my Scotch Ale recipe. It came really close to Founders Dirty Bastard but with a slightly less sweet, malty flavor.

Disaster averted! I remembered that I used to email my recipes to a homebrew store and have them combine the grains. I searched my old sent folder... 2017 I sent my complete recipe to the store for my Scotch Ale. The prodigal recipe has returned. Slaughter the calf and let the drinks flow!

Another example of why I haven't gone paperless.

Good news on the email, Nick!

Yeah it is! I feel as good today as I did bad yesterday so it all balances out. And since none of the beers are hop forward, the hop schedule and amount won't be hard to figure out.
