Dearborn Heights Michigan??

I may buzz into the D this weekend to pick up a truck.
Man, the photos look like its in an urban wasteland .
We bought a couple of Porsche's in that area 15 years ago, and it was pretty rough back then . Sitting on the side of the road outside of a dealership, we had 2 of the roughest looking prostitutes I have ever seen, trying to engage us at 6 am . The whole area looked like it was out of a movie . Loaded up , got fuel, and got the heck out of dodge as fast as possible .
I was going to take my 16 year old son and make an adventure out of it .
Any areas where a guy like me should avoid all together ?

Dunno, but if you want to see some great machines, check out the Henry Ford Museum.

This map says everything east of Telegraph is danger zone but I don't think it's that bad.
The riverside has picked up in some areas and even gotten a little hoity-toit.

Stay away from parking downtown, and use your radar when stopped at gas stations.

Dearborn borders on Detroit Metro Airport...so I've been there many many times pre-flight.
I've never had the feeling that it's unsafe. Not sure exactly where the 'Heights' part is.

It's home to Millers Bar and Grille....winner of the best hamburger in Michigan....and it is good.

Might suggest staying in Ann Arbor and showing your son around U of Michigan. Plenty to do and Dearborn is only about 20+ miles away. It’s graduation weekend but there will be plenty going on.

First, don't study that crime grade map too hard. The red square above is the General Motors Tech Center. It's a one mile by by one mile campus outside of Detroit, surrounded by a big fence, with a lot of cameras and security checkpoints to enter.

I'd recommend Henry Ford Museum. If the Tigers were in town, heading downtown is nice. But the weekend looks cold.

If it’s graduation weekend, be prepared to pony up for a hotel. At least that was our experience at our sons graduation.

There are some very good Middle Eastern restaurants in Dearborn,

Great place to urban explore in may of the abandoned buildings. Try Detroit style pizza!

And a coney dog. Or two. Or three.

I shifted careers so I don't go to London anymore - I could really go for an "eat it today, taste it tomorrow" shwarma/kebob though. That was my go-to/drunk food over there.

Growing up on the west side of the state we always went towards the lake and Chicago so Detroit, outside of cheap flights to DTW, is still foreign to me but I'm learning that it's actually pretty cool. Yes, it's a big-ish city with problems, but what interesting places don't have those?

I still want to go to that Belgian bar with the cheese rolling (not cheese but you get the picture) games as seen in one of Bourdain's shows.

We were there early this year w/ my son looking at Univ of Michigan. Drove through Dearborn Heights going up to see the Edsel Ford House after visiting the Henry Ford Museum.

It was sketchy but we stayed on main roads. They have a crazy thing where the businesses can buy a flashing light to put on their roof to alert the police they are in trouble.

If you have time go spend an afternoon at The Henry Ford Museum. It was amazing. My son (17) loved it, as did I.

Dearborn Heights is fine - it's a working-class city, nothing particularly remarkable about it. I love Detroit (I lived in or right next to it 1998-2008, spent all my time in the city, and still have lots of friends there, so I visit a couple times a year still) and would be happy to share suggestions for it. I'll also recommend the Shatila bakery in particular in Dearborn. It's on W. Warren, but I don't remember the cross street. Among many other things, they make their own ice cream and it's wonderful, especially the kashta, a flavor I have yet to find elsewhere.

The Cadieux Cafe.

I'm just over a mile from there. Anyone is free to hit me up if they're in the D and wants to check it out.

^^^ Looking at their menu....very reasonable prices. I see they have beer from this place..
https://www.breweryvivant.com/

It's a converted old church in Grand Rapids. Similar menu...but smaller.
Their Belgian beers are excellent.

Grandpa did a lot of restoration work for Henry's museum...he was a specialty mold maker from 1916 t 1959. He had no love for Ford. When he retired they asked him to stay on to train the new guys..he declined saying he had spent enough of time working there.

Cadieux Cafe is a great place - it's been around since the late '30s or so, IIRC. Well worth a visit if you're on the east side. I used to live nearby. Feather bowling is like bocce ball for old Belgian men.

In the summer of 68...the year that the Tigers won the World Series, my brother, father, and I made two different trips from the west side of the state to Tiger Stadium for games.
The best route to get there was Grand River Ave all the way to the stadium. 1968 was the year of the Detroit riots and we drove past miles of burnt out homes and businesses. It was scary and when we got to the stadium...all was good again.
