XR400R replacement

At 56 I’m getting a little tired of kicking over my XR400 when it’s hot and can say that I’m a little jealous of my son’s electric foot on his DRZ. What’s a modern replacement for the XR? I do like it’s grunt but I’m thinking technology has moved on. I’m not a fast rider and most of our riding is in the OHV desert parts here in Southern California. Thanks.

This would tick a lot of boxes...EFI, electric start...

I was riding yesterday.

Buddy has a CRF250f that drags his overweight body all over the place.
Ktm 350 xcf-w makes me drool
Another buddy has a YZ250FX. That thing rips.

I have a two stroke with an electric start. Almost a Mountainbike. Smelly, nasty exhaust however.

Desert riding? I think the KTM or Yamaha would be most satisfying.

I have a CRF450x. It has electric start and is a step up from your XR400.

I’ve ridden with friends who have KTMs and tried a few. The 250 XC-F is a really nice bike. I’ve also ridden a buddies 300 XC-W and if he will sell it to me, it will be my next bike… so light. It felt like I was riding a mountain bike. The suspension is SO nice. Effortless to jump.

Made my 450X feel like a clapped out lumber wagon (it isn’t).

Don’t like the smell of your 2 stroke exhaust? Get some sweet smelling mix oil. Some of the guys at the kart track run stuff that smells like berries. If doesn’t have to be nausea inspiring.

My Son dropped a deposit for one of these, the 60 hp version.
Power is adjustable, dial it clear down to a few HP's or up to 60 to move lots of sand!
No exhaust smell at all!

There is the Honder CRF300L if you want to be road legal.

If you don't need to be road legal I'd recommend looking into some of those battery powered motocross bikes.

The Honda CRF450L, and the off road enduro model, are kind of tall and big.

KTM do an electric Freeride

Yorkie 04-25-2022 10:22 AM

Thanks guys. I cannot say I'm a fan of an electric dirt bike (I have no good reasons) and I really need to try a modern 2 stroke as last ones I rode was back in the last century and they would typically try and kill me - CR500 et al.

rattlsnak 04-25-2022 10:34 AM

Are you leaning towards a 2 or 4 stroke? Either way, KTM or Beta is the hot setups right now..

Tim Hancock 04-25-2022 10:57 AM

Any of the modern 250 4 stroke mx bikes would serve you well. I am a Honda guy so I kinda like the CRF250. My main ride is still a 2 stroke CR250 but may well end up on a 4 stroke mx bike at some point due to them being easier to ride fast. On a race track on my 2 stroke I have to use my clutch exiting most corners and lots of shifting if I want to go fast. One can be much more lazy on the modern 4 stroke mx bikes which one can simply roll on the gas exiting corners due to the low end torque. Much less work resulting in less arm pump for me to still ride fast for a whole moto.

CRF300L or 300 Rallye

All the cool kids (or at least the guys living way over their income) ride TPI two-strokes.

Mine is the last iteration of carb. I am a luddite.

But, they pretty much all swear by the TPI two-strokes. There is a gas tank and an oil tank. The bike varies the mix by load and rpm. If it works, it is pretty trick. If not...you are walking.

Not new technology for snowmobiles. I’d rather walk home from a broken down dirt bike than a broken down mountain sled any time…

There is a 06 KTM 400 EXC on Craigslist in Portland for $3500. Looks to be a bargain.

It gets a good discount as it is pictured with a sand tire.
