The Ride Of A Lifetime
|
Cool.
Hey Dave, Here's good ol' Jeffrey and his 930 cab through New Cuyama going west to Santa Maria with the small group from TRE about 15-20 years ago.:D Still have the car, 360 HP at the wheels. Sadly it doesn't get driven much, maybe once every 3 months?:( Thought I show you the same wheels as Harry's :)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651031716.jpg |
Oh that guy on the left of pic with half his body cut off is Rob Dickenson, Singer. He had a very, very nice, tricked, brown long hood.
|
Great video as always. I just wish he'd spend some money on a decent microphone.
Also... 13 MPG seems excessive for a 930 (5.52 Km per liter). It's a "special wishes" car but I suspect there's something wrong. I found this annoying. Faulty float gauge in the oil tank? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651048858.jpg |
He checks the oil with the engine not running?
|
Yes. If the car is all warmed up and has idled for a few moments, you can shut the engine off and check the oil. The reading will be the same as if the engine were still running.
|
13 mpg is not out of the question. My 78 930 got about that - even trying to drive the legal limit.
|
13 miles per gallon out of a 930 is actually pretty decent, depending on how you’re driving it. I’ve seen worse.
|
He was certainly surprised it was that low, as was I. I guess it should have been ordered with the race/rally extended gas tank!
|
Jeff: great pic, great cars and great wheels - what are they?
And thanks for sharing! |

That is a very enjoyable video. I so enjoy listening to Harry. I could listen to him for hours.
As much as I admire that vehicle, at 13 mpg I think the novelty would wear off after a 5000 mi driving season. |

My slant is about 12-13 MPG… if I drive it as intended. If I drive it nice, closer to 20 MPG.

My mileage is pretty bad too. Like you, my avg. is 12-13 hwy going 75 with Andial's lowered ring and pinion. If I get on it, mpg is in single digit. |

I never got 18 miles per gallon in my testarossa. I don’t think it was significantly different to the 930s but frankly, I don’t remember. A stock 930 doesn’t get much better mileage than a modified one, especially the European-spec cars. Most of those didn’t even have 02 sensors.
A 930 is a fairly heavy car for its size and it’s got the aerodynamics of a brick. |
My 76 930 which is 100% stock does better than 20 MPG. It also is only running 7 lbs of boost max.
To reiterate what was said above, think of a turbo engine as a variable displacement engine. At 0 boost, is it the normal displacement, 3.3L, and makes maybe 250 HP. As you add boost, you are putting the air (and fuel) into that engine of a larger engine. At 1 bar of boost, you have effectively doubled the engine capacity to 6.6L and it makes about 500 HP. 500 HP is about right for a modern naturally aspirated 6.6L engine. Putting this into perspective, the 2.0L in my WRX can handle 1.5 bars of boost showroom stock and is 268 HP. At 1.5 bars of boost, that 2.0L engine is burning thr fuel and air of a NA 5.0L engine so 268 HP is maybe a bit conservative, this is where the bigger exhaust and tuning comes in to add up to another 100 HP. So wrapping this up, 12 MPG is about right for a rich running 6.6 L engine. I realize this is over simplified and that the displacement / HP relationship isn’t linear but is does help put things into perspective. |
I'm spending two weeks in Andalucia in late May and early June - I'm sure Harry will lend me his 930 to get around in, no?
