Things to do over a weekend stay in Atlanta?
Going to be in Atlanta over June 17-20 weekend. Anything gear head related going on? Sights? Restaurants? From Ak and anything will be new and different I'm sure.

My best advice is stay OUT of Atlanta at night . Seems like there is a shooting every other night . Stay safe.

If from Alaska, I'm sure you might be acclimated to the heat and humidity by, oh, say October. But if you were to head out now for New Orleans you'd be alright I s'pose....

Porsche experience (PECATL). Book the restaurant 356, if possible book a sim session, or a ride.. Enjoy the museum (free) and the store (dangerous)

Braves are playing on the 20th, there is a mimosa fest that morning at the Battery, always car stuff going on and live bands/concerts etc.. Shoot me a PM in a few weeks and i can look at the local calendars.. (most of them only go out till late May right now but fill in week by week.

It’s been along time since I lived in Atlanta, but maybe Porsche Experience and the aquarium?
Don’t the Braves play up in Cobb County now? That should be safe. |

Porsche Experience center is nice. Eat at the restaurant. Make sure you request window seat when you make reservations. And you do need reservations to get into the facility.
The Aquarium is nice. Pre-purchase passes to skip the line. The Botanical Gardens are nice. There is a little cafe on site that is not bad for a light lunch.

Be aware the Juneteenth Celebration is that entire weekend and is held down at Centennial Olympic Park. That park is in the same area of downtown as the Aquarium. Expect traffic to be very bad as the celebrations will spread throughout that area.
https://www.juneteenthatl.com/ I'll also suggest Porsche Center - for certain a meal (make reservations) to gain entrance and watch the track activity even if you don't participate.

No climbing. No nuttin'. Just Robert E Lee and a coupla friends. Also the varsity burger joint is pretty cool if you want a story to tell. Not as robust as Hogg Brothers in Anchorage but an experience.

+1 on Stone Mountain
Also the 360 painting of the Battle of Atlanta is pretty cool. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/atlanta-cyclorama And a huge Hell Yeah on The Varsity restaurant. That is an institution! "What'll y'all have, what'll y'all have?"!!

I grew up in Atlanta and went to Tech. I've been gone for a long time, but I go back every year for Christmas to see family and sometimes on another visit (I'll be there later this month). My partner joined me for Christmas last year - she had never been to Georgia before.
Will second seeing the Cyclorama as something pretty cool that you can't see anywhere else. There is, IIRC, one other cyclorama remaining, I think in Pennsylvania. It was a huge thing in America in the late 19th century. It was recently restored and moved to the Atlanta History Center on West Paces Ferry Rd. in Buckhead. Also second Stone Mountain as something unique. You can hike to the top, and it's all a big park. No idea what the OP is and isn't into, but if he loves to cook the Your Dekalb Farmer's Market (yes that's the name) and the Buford Highway Farmer's Market are two of the best international markets I've been to anywhere. They're both huge indoor markets (not really farmer's markets) with items that are difficult to impossible to find in most places. For instance the Buford Highway market is the only place in the US I've ever seen nispero, a fruit that I like very much from my earlier childhood in Venezuela and Colombia. For places to eat that are institutions - see above re: The Varsity, across the connector from Tech; I'm partial to Fat Matt's Rib Shack (on Piedmont, north of the park) for barbeque; I also like The Flying Biscuit, which started in Five Points or Little (can't remember which) but has become a small local chain, for southern food; and Mellow Mushroom, my favorite pizza place; There's also a great little sandwiches-and-cakes place in Decatur called Southern Sweets Bakery. There is a really nice Tuscan place called Antica Posta that I ate at years ago that I believe is still there. Finally, as ever there is Mary Mac's Tea Room for OG southern food. There's plenty of great outdoor space, from Piedmont Park to the National Recreation Areas along the Chattahoochee to the Belt Line. Also the Clermont Lounge is...quite an experience. An eccentric place to go out for a drink is Sister Louisa's Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium.
