The laws across the country regarding alcohol sales really are bonkers. I would imagine most of them persist at this point because it's good for somebody's pocketbook, but the Sunday sales laws just need to die.

Maryland has drive up/in liquor stores that sell everything from beer to the hard stuff.
In the old days there were always a few liquor stores on the border with PA, VA, DE, etc. to service those in need.

Just south of Wellsburg NY on NY 427 there is a Dandy Mart that straddles the NY-PA border. They do a cross border trade, gas is always (or used to be) cheaper in PA and on the NY side of the store you can by beer by the can if you want. In PA not so. Also, across the street on the NY side is a liquor/wine shop, in PA you need to go to a "State Store" for the hard stuff.

I remember liquor stores with drive through windows in Florida, in fact, in Ft Walton Beach there is a drive through convenience store that you actually drive through the store!!! Shout out to Robinson's Cruise Thru!!!
Just looked them up and it seems that Robinson's Cruise Thru is more of a drive through restaurant/taco stand now but they have a pretty good selection of beer choices!!! ![]() Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk Last edited by HobieMarty; 05-16-2022 at 08:04 AM.. |

in PA you cannot buy 3 six packs at one time. Max 2 at the designated beer store and a case minimum at the distributor. Go figure

The case minimum is gone, you can buy six packs now from the distributors, as well as in many grocery stores (along w/ wine in some grocery stores). Spirits are still limited to the State run stores. The 2 six pack limit is only for grocery stores or bars (although you can just put the 2 in the car, and go back in and buy 2 more). Silly laws...

I bought beer in Pennsylvania once. I remember it being an odd experience. I TRIED once to buy beer in Indiana on a Sunday. I also remember something odd about ordering mixed drinks and a beer in a bar in Park City. I seem to remember that you cannot do that at the same bar.

It is annoying to stop in a state on Sunday and find no alcohol sales on Sunday, not even a beer.
Before my dad got married, he said he knew the number of three bootleggers. They would deliver whatever liquor he wanted in short order. The state went "wet" and the bootleggers were all out of business, as the liquor stores were way cheaper. I moved here in 1978. Back then, the law said you had to bring a bottle of the booze you want to drink, and hand it to the bartender to pour your cocktails from. One of my buddies came to Oklahoma and wanted to go out. We went to a bar, and he walked up and ordered a Jack and Coke. They bartender asked what name is on the bottle. It was hysterical to see his face and then he slowly said "Jack Daniels?" like it was a test. The bartender, understood, and said no what is your last name, everyone has to bring their own bottle, and he pointed to the shelves and all the bottles were labeled Smith, Jones, Williams, and my buddy figured it out, and said he was Mr. Smith. That was when the bartender poured his drink. Almost no one brought their own, the bar just labeled it Smith or whatever. I just ordered a beer. Now it is legal to stop at a restaurant, and order a cocktail to go, and they will bring it out to your car. Of course you are supposed to wait until you get home to drink it.

I was at the Kroger in Bluffton recently and they have a bar with some tables. I took a picture and almost posted it. It was the middle of a day in a grocery store and people were drinking beer and wine. 😂 This place is huge. In addition to everything else they had a ton of household stuff, some clothes, etc. |

Around 1977, I went back to Westport Connecticut to visit my friends during their high school graduation. We went out that night and about 8:30 I said hey let’s go to the beer store. They looked at me funny, because the all the liquor stores closed at 8 pm. I had forgotten. : (

quick story about a trip to VA Beach many years ago. Since we were staying a week, we figured we would get a 1/4 keg for the room since it would be cheaper. Being from PA, kegs were purchased at beer distributers(what others may call the beer store) but everyone in PA calls them distributers. Look in the yellow pages, find closest "beer distributer" (2) buddies hop in the car to go to the address and are gone for at least (2) hours. They come back empty handed, the "beer distributer" was an actual wholesale distributer. They said they pulled up to the guard gate, and (as 18 wheelers and box trucks of beer are moving in/out) asked "can you buy beer here?" Said the guard got a good chuckle out of it, and explained that in VA grocery stores sell kegs. We went to the Food Lion a few blocks away and got our keg for the week.
