Pull-A-Part Score
 

My son and I took a short trip to a local Pull-A-Part in search of a few things for the 2000 Lexus RX we call Elvis.
I got the windshield and roof trim as mine had recently disappeared. I also got the front splash guard, mine hasn't had one since I've owned it. I got an O2 sensor, a driver's side headlight assembly, driver's side window control panel, a passenger side front door speaker, and a clear lens cover for a door courtesy light. I also got a AC/heater blower fan for my daughter's Honda Civic because the one in her car was starting to make a little noise. Nice score! There are few things more gratifying to me than a good score at the self service junkyard. I’m a recycling freak and I hate to see good parts going to waste.

I spent the day pulling parts off of a parts car for my old Mercedes w123 wagon. The donor car is a sedan with a bad motor but lots of good parts. I’m switching over what I need and trying to sell the rest before scrapping it.

One day the scores are going to be in use. Somehow, I want to believe that. I keep tryin!

Back in the 90's & when I was living in Lehigh Acres (Ft. Myers) I owned an '81 TR7 drop-head coupe. Then I found and purchased another one - a '76 coupe - just for it's parts.

On a subsequent trip up I-95 to visit my oldest brother in Virginia the transmission broke about an hour south of the North Carolina/Virginia state line. My brother came down with his car hauler and brought me back to his house. I ended up changing the transmission out in his driveway. The replacement was from that coupe! I called a friend of mine who broke into my garage and shipped it to me.

Drove her back home w/no issues!

I always thought that was a pretty good story to tell.

When I sold the car the buyer got quite a few spare parts to go with it!

They rip the cats off the cars in Ohio so upstream sensors are seldom available.

I love that place. One day I ran into my Doctor there. Not the routine demographic but he loves the "win" when it works out.

My first score was in 1973 when I got two good seats for my Opel GT at a pull it yourself place.

Nice. I love scrounging through the yard. Those days are over. Local you pull it caught fire a year ago and never reopened.

Hobie, your score looks a lot like mine just after I bought my W140.... Lots of deferred maintenance.

- I do love older cars but you have to look after them.

Not sure what "$300-ish" is but the most expensive part was the headlight at 34 bucks.
Anyway, it was a very relaxing day. Took the day off work, using PTO so I was still getting paid. I didn't care what time we got there or how long it took to remove things. We were there about an hour and a half and for some reason it was just relaxing, maybe I should just hang out in junkyards to de-stress instead of going to the beach lol. I even helped a guy find a particular row that he was searching for, pointed him in the right direction as I had just been at that row of vehicles. It was funny, I was washing my hands at the outside sink and he started asking me questions which I answered and he asked if I worked there, lol.
It was a good day for sure.

That is a great story for sure.
When I had my TR6, I also had a parts car, mainly got it for the frame and did a fame swap. I sold off the other parts a little at a time to offset repair costs. I Loved that car.

I’ve been to junkyards in the past, where they pulled the parts, but never a pull-a-part.

I presume you bring your own tools and I can see that for small jobs, but how does it work when it comes to bigger parts like engines, transmissions, rear ends, etc. Can you bring a vehicle in with tools, jacks, etc?

$34 for that headlight?

I got a rear axle assembly for my brother's truck with him one time. We got it disconnected, and they loaded it on the trailer with a fork lift.

I saw a guy there that was allowed to drive his vehicle in and it looked like he was working on something pretty substantial.

Yes, you take your own tools and it costs 2 bucks to enter. They have wheel barrows for you to use. When I've been there in the past, I've only ever been after a couple of small things but this time I grabbed a wheel barrow.

Update!!!
I spent the day today installing everything. Got the windshield and roof trim on and used some black sealer at the clip points to make certain this stuff isn't coming off. I had actually removed the passenger side windshield and roof trim to see how it was attached, figured it was better to learn at home instead of stressing about it at a salvage yard out in the hot sun, lol.
The RX had never had a splash guard under the front end and you could see some hoses and frame, now it looks complete.
Anyhoo, I'm glad I got it all done and while I was at it, I rotated the tires, lol. I also installed the speaker in the passenger side door panel and the cover for the courtesy light in the same door panel, installed an O2 sensor for bank 1, and the window switch control panel.

The coil/ plugs on those are easy except two of them if I remember correctly.

Ish is an approximation. I'll use it in a sentence. Most of the girls I date are intelligent but large-ish. It gives the listener an idea without having to say incredibly obese.:D

Anyways. I though for sure that light would have been $50+ That was a major find.
