How can I get a walker for my dad in Juneau AK tomorrow?
I’m on a cruise with my dad and he normally won’t use a walker. The last day has shown that he absolutely needs one (he has 2 at home).
Any ideas how / where I can get one in Juneau tomorrow? I can see the next 5 days being terrible without one. |
Does the cruise ship you are on have one? Seems like they would have some medical supplies. Wheelchairs, etc... Also seems like Juneau would have a pharmacy or medical equipment shop with walkers/canes/wheelchairs etc.
This is the first thing to come up in quick search: https://www.ronsapothecary.com/durable-medical-equipment-dme This place might need an MD prescription, but maybe not. |
I asked onboard for a walker and checked the Ron’s website already. There must be a place. Otherwise I’m going to Costco and getting him some walking sticks…

Drugstore or ortho supply place.
If there is a goodwill store, they will have one for cheap |
I just googled "Juneau medical supply." Found a place.
The Goodwill store is brilliant. Good luck. Also, what about using a wheelchair as a temporary solution? I bet the ship will have one. |
Sounds like goodwill type store or second hand store the way to go.
I'm killing some time, so you got me googling- what's the closest store to the ports? I didn't find anything right at the docks, but there were at least TEN jewelry stores right across the street from the docks. Wow! It's a trap! Maybe you can buy him some romantic jewelry? :D |
Thank you guys for the help. I’m going to try goodwill.
Worst case I’ll get something at Costco. The rolling of the ship isn’t really helping with his balance but on the upside he is doing much better than when I arrived at his place on Monday night. Yesterday morning, he didn’t want to get out of bed and asked me to cancel the trip… I didn’t. So far this has been the right choice, he’s really enjoying it so far (not quite 24 hours in). |

And as stated, I think you'd find one at any CVS or Walgreens or <insert locally common drug store name here>. |
Sorry to hear this, Billy. Hope your Dad gets whatever he needs to enjoy the rest of your cruise.
The suggestions so far out weigh mine but just in case, there's always Amazon next day, if you can get the right ship-to address figured out: Walkers For Seniors |
You could also go on social media and inquire.
It always amazes me how powerful a tool this is. |
I would try Facebook Marketplace for the neighborhood closest to where you will be. Or even see if there is a buy nothing page for that same area and see if you can borrow one.
|
Yeah, you want to call Goodwill and see. I buy crutches and walkers there all the time. I bet I have given away dozens of pairs of crutches and walkers.

Either one of those would probably work.
They are adjustable for height, but you want one that is in the right range of height. |
Bob - I can call them I think. I will give it a try.

I found this knee bike on Craigslist; unfortunately no walkers listed. Do you facebook? (I don't) I hear facebook marketplace is a going concern these days. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653002446.png |
Thanks guys. My wife called both second hand shops and neither had one. Nothing close on FB marketplace. That being said, Fred Meyer has 2 in stock (not showing online) for $114 each… I guess I know where I’m going when we hit shore tomorrow.

Guys - thank you to everyone for your efforts, ideas, and support on this.
It is a very strange world and even stranger how it works sometimes… Juneau Drug Co. is no longer right at our mooring (it has been relocated downtown and unfortunately the walker they had was was hospital style with only 2 wheels and no seat), it cost me a 2.2 km walk (round trip) to learn this. I called a cab and we went to the Fred Meyer on the Glacier Highway and I got one of the 2 walkers that my wife had them confirm that they had when she called yesterday. Aisle 32, right where they said it would be. 4 minutes, in and out. We had the cab drop us off downtown, he suggested in front of the Red Dog Saloon. I literally assembled the walker on the sidewalk in front of the bar. Dad suggestd we go in for a beer so we did. We sat there at our table enjoying the music and the guy at the table next to us looked strangely familiar. Then his wife came up and grabbed by dad by the face and said - is that you, Bill? These are some old friends I haven’t seen in 21 years and dad hadn’t seen in about 18 years. They are on the same boat as us. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1653104042.jpg So yes, we got the walker, it made our lives far, far better. Dad struggled to walk 100 feet before and he just walked 1.1 kms back from downtown with ease. Once again - thanks to the pelican gang for pitching in to help out. You guys are ‘the best’… |

Between your post, and Flatbutt's graduation photo in the pics thread, this has been a great week. |
Greener in Alaska than it is in Cowtown!
Love it when a plan comes together. Have a great trip! |
I love happy endings. May the entire trip go as well.
