Dave Chappelle may face civil suit after being attacked on stage
Chappelle was finishing up his Netflix is a Joke show at the Hollywood Bowl when 23-year-old Isaiah Lee allegedly ran on stage with a weapon and assaulted the controversial comedian.
Chappelle's security team apparently tackled the attacker, who was later taken away from the venue on a stretcher with an apparent arm injury and bruises on his face. "Believe it or not, Dave Chappelle and his team may be facing some civil liabilities when all of the dust settles," legal analyst Alison Triessl told KTLA. "If the threat was over and he was no longer a danger, and had been restrained, they can not take revenge on Mr. Lee," Triessl said. TMZ has released video where Chappelle can be heard talking about the attacker's injuries and appears to be happy about the outcome. "I felt good my friends broke his arm," Chappelle is heard saying in the video. Those words could cost Chappelle if a civil suit is filed. "It is very possible that Dave Chappelle's own words, where he says that he roughed the guy up, can be used against him in a potential civil manner down the line," Triessl said. The Hollywood Bowl may not be off the hook either. Despite confiscating patrons’ cell phones ahead of the show, the security team somehow missed a replica gun that contained a knife blade. "The Hollywood Bowl or the promoters involved in this show, including Netflix, may be facing civil liability for their lapse of security. Something went very wrong here," Triessl said. Felony charges will not be filed against Lee for the assault, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón's office announced Thursday. Gascón's office has referred the case to the City Attorney's Office, which filed four misdemeanor charges against Lee. Misdemeanor charges carry a maximum jail sentence of one year in California. Triessl was surprised the DA’s Office declined to pursue the case. "Given the fact that this is a high-profile case and that Mr. Lee did assault Dave Chappelle with a weapon, it is surprising that the District Attorney's Office has declined to file charges and referred this case to the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office," Triessl said. The Los Angeles Police Department said that when Lee rushed on stage he had what appeared to be a handgun in his hand, but it turned out to be a replica that contained a blade. Sources later told the Los Angeles Times, however, that Lee did not brandish the weapon, but it was found inside a bag he was carrying. https://www.kron4.com/news/dave-chappelle-may-face-civil-suit-after-being-attacked-on-stage/ |

Considering what happened on stage after the tackle I'm not surprised by any of this.
EDIT: According to The New York Post this is the weapon Lee was carrying. ![]()

Not sure that will work, Chapelle is a Comedian , on a stage, doing an act with a paying audience in front of him
All he has to say is , in showbiz, Show must go On: i cracked a few jokes. I didn't order the man roughed up, nor was I personally involved in what happened back stage. I was making sure my customers were getting what they paid for. The end.

I always wanted to kick the schit outta of a n*****.
The knife on him is totally hearsay. Did he use the knife. was it planted by the entourage that beat the schit out of him? Did he just tackle him, or did he have that knife in his hand ready to go? It looked like simple assault from running on stage and lunging/tackling. drop charges. Pay him off. let it go away. Next time. Don't stomp the **** out of a guy.

I didn't go to the Dave Chapelle show, but last night I went to see another comedian at the Bowl. Each of the 3 comedians last night made some reference/joke about the incident. The last one even joked about how easy it would be to hop the fence and run onstage, challenging the audience that we didn't have the guts to do it.
![]() It's odd the attacker dude would even be able to smuggle in the fake gun-knife. Everyone has to go through a metal detector to get in. They even give us little pouches into which to lock our cellphones and smart watches to prevent their use during the show, though otherwise security is pretty relaxed (because it's the Hollywood Bowl).

Crazy, if that is the one I think it is, it is small, like key chain small.
![]() I expected something more like this. ![]() Don't get me wrong, I still think that he should have had the book thrown him and hate the idea that he will likely profit off his actions.

Having a keychain knife in the pocket vs. wielding it are two different things, thus the misdemeanor charges I'd suspect.
I'm not sure what the assault criteria is between 'wrestling' and 'pummeling' and went it is elevated to a felony. He should get the full misdemeanor, no counter suit allowed, plus some psyche ward time. Or other numbnuts will copy him. Or next time I'm at the Met Opera House watching La Bohème, that off-note celloist is going down. Big time.

It is never right when a group of men put a beating on another man that is down and defenseless.
It's up to the court system to decide punishment.

Some people need their ass kicked. A lot of the problems we have today stem from the fact nobody gets punched in the mouth when they deserve it anymore.

I guess I'm either old school or from the wrong neighborhood, but I firmly believe in beating the crap out of guys who attack me.

I agree, but is it the same when you hire 6 guys to do it and stand there and say stomp him? Cowardly really.

We all know that idiot DA (formerly the SF DA) is not going to do anything to this turd criminal. That's what CA gets when they elect these POS libs.
I am a CA born native and it makes me sick to remember when CA was the "Golden State" and is now the crap brown, soon to be a 3rd World replica, thanks to the liberals like Newsom and Pelosi.

Actually, it's more humane that way. Had it only been one security guard, a bad guy could be sorely tempted into behaving badly. Having a team of six security guys means there is no doubt at all that an assailant will get manhandled and beaten badly. That the assailant still ignored that means he richly deserved it. Since the state doesn't care about prosecuting bad guys anymore, it's up to private folks to keep themselves safe.

Just dropping in to say the 'journalism' quoted in the OP is the worst sort of nonsense and meant to appeal to the lowest functioning people in the audience. We really could use a lot less of this sort of stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some death threats aimed at Chappelle after the Netflix brouhaha. It would've been prudent for anyone to hire a few guys blessed with certain skills.
Those six guys he hired were waiting for a moment just like this. Job done. Hard to feel bad for the perp. I wonder if people were mad at the owner of Ford's theatre when John Wilkes Booth broke his ankle jumping out of the Presidential box.

Attack me or my family/friends and all bets are off. This ought to be fully reflected in the judicial system. That dude should shut up and go to jail. As should wild Bill S.
