Got a Great Dane in the hood?

Tobra 05-25-2022 08:20 PM

How long ago was that pruned?

Por_sha911 05-25-2022 08:52 PM

#2 Different kind of bush. I cut a lot of dead branches out once and then had to do it again yesterday.

The dead branches look like this:

These bushes are no where near each other (front and back of house) and there are others in between these areas totally unaffected.

This started happening before they were pruned this spring so the pruning is not the issue.
No great dane, no rodents that I can tell. Neither look like the pictures for Cherry Laurel.

All those little bumps? Do they squish? Maybe scale?

Por_sha911 05-25-2022 09:15 PM

I don't think they squish.

Should I try some general disease spray or insect spray and hope for the best?

Rhododendron?

PorscheGAL 05-26-2022 01:13 AM

Bush 1 is Cleyera.
Bush 2 is a type of Holly.

Hard to tell from the pics but here are a couple ideas:

Have you fertilized it? Sometimes fertilizer too close and dense near the base of the shrub will do that.

Around the base of the shrub: is there a build up of leaves or dirt?

Are there white dots on the underside of the leaves? Scale will show up that way.

Cut a branch off. Take to a locally owned garden center in a zip lock bag. Typically, at least in my area, there will be someone very knowledgeable who will be able to look at it and give an answer and a fix. Some issues can be very regional. Good luck.

i just had sections of my boxwoods die.
turned pure brown

greglepore 05-26-2022 05:13 AM

You don't use roundup to weed around those by chance?

cassisrot 05-26-2022 09:07 AM

Master gardener extension service offices are a good source for garden issues.

Thank you.
No signs of scale, white dots, or mealybugs. I have fertilized lately.

If I can't get help from the local folks would it hurt to spray with a insect and/or disease control like Bayer 3 in 1 Insect/Disease/Mite Control????

red 928 05-26-2022 05:23 PM

Hey, keep it in PARF man! ;)

Depends..sometimes in really warm weather, sprays can damage shrubbery. Maybe fertilizer burn from applying too much? If that's the case, heavy watering to dilute it.

Again..just guesswork on my part.

WTH! We’re on page 2 and Baz hasn’t chimed in. Surf must be up!

Por_sha911 05-26-2022 06:01 PM

We had a 2 week dry spell but no massive heat to stress them, no fertilizer, and what's weird is there are others of the same genes around different places in the yard that just healthy and happy.
If you look at the one (bad) pic of the branch, you can see how it has a texture like it is coated. No bugs to be seen.

cabmandone 05-26-2022 06:53 PM

I had white stuff on some shrubs outside so I sprayed with malathion. Shrubs are alive. White stuff is gone.
