Bring a Trailer screwed over one of my buddies
So my buddy has a 71 Bmw 2002 finished in Malaga, saddle brown interior, and he submitted it to BaT a month ago. They sat on the auction for 3 weeks, and listed the car a few days ago (auction ends today):
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-bmw-2002-59/ Here's the thing..... 2 days later, THEY LIST A DIFFERENT 71 BMW 2002, IN THE SAME COLOR, SAME INTERIOR, AND EVEN THE SAME F*CKING WHEELS: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-bmw-2002-60/ Would you be pissed off? I would be. BaT ignored his complaints. Now the interest is down compared to the other cars that he's listed in the past, and it's basically because anyone interested in these two cars is cross shopping. Same car, same year, same color, same interior, SAME WHEELS, put on auction at the same time after they sat on the auction for WEEKS. This is infuriating. Personally, I will never use BaT in the future, just constant BS like this and once something is listed they refuse to do anything about their errors.

Obviously not as they sat on this auction for 3 weeks, then listed it RIGHT before listing an almost identical car. This seems like it was done on purpose.... I am never using them again.

I think BAT exercises too much control over the seller VS other avenues. It's my car, my money - I decide the minimum, etc.

I would certainly be pissed at them and I'd have it taken down. I currently have a '66 Volvo Amazon listed and I am not frustrated with BaT but the bull**** commentary. My car is a 251k all original car that has been daily driven, basically, since new...
I have gone above and beyond in being extremely honest and transparent in showing the flaws. The car has ugly rust on the drivers bottom side....rust that can be repaired back to new for under a thousand bucks by a shop, or likely a couple hundred bucks and a case of beer on a weekend. I did not repair it simply due to scarcity of free time...as it doesn't pose any threat to drivability or safety. However, the comments, especially of those not bidding, are absolutely crushing the overall image of the car. It is a very honest good driving car...and the comments are putting the entirety of the focus on the rust. Frankly, I could have avoided disclosing any of it (as a recent seller did with the same car) and someone would have gotten a car, they probably wouldn't have looked under and been none-the-wiser... I am just disgusted at the ignorance flowing from keyboards across the nation... sound off

Yeah, and after the sale, you cease to exist to them - zero support post auction or re: money exchange... Good place to make a buck but they don't care about your reviews, they have long lists of people waiting their turn to be listed... I'd go with another site - collecting cars, Pcar market, Marqued, see what you get there ?

My experience with BAT was also less than stellar. It's been a couple of years ago.
IIRC, they listed my car and it had a strange end date, like Sunday evening at 9pm over a holiday weekend. It didn't meet reserve. I complained on basis that the listing dates sucked and impacted the sale. They countered with ... your car didn't have any interest and petered out.

We tried that and they said "nah you have strong opening bids there's enough buyers out there", which I get, but SAME YEAR/COLOR/WHEELS?! Cmon!!! Why wouldn't they wait a week to space them out, or at least list the 2nd one AFTER this auction? ****ing infuriating.

Guys, think about it...They're in the business of MAKING money for themselves, not the sellers. It's been apparent to me that since the sale of BaT to the BIG company it has changed a lot. Look at how many cars they now list live. I'm sure it's being limited by the number of people they have working as 'agents' to interface with the sellers. They're no longer 'enthusiast' oriented. They've gone BIG TIME and it's all about the money.

What I don't get is the listing of cars that have sold on BaT just a few years/months before. If there's such a back log of waiters why not list from someone new with a 5 year moratorium on cars that have already been on the site?

They have gone from having 100-150 cars listed at a time to something like 700 cars at a time since the site was sold to Hearst. It’s become an absolute whorehouse, just the Carmax of collector sites but without the protections of Carmax. It is what it is.
And you’re right, they don’t give a ****. Modern tech companies and web sites are run by lawyers. If they helped you more with the auction or payment, they could open themselves up to exposure that apparently doesn’t exist if they stay hands-off. That’s my theory, anyhow. |

I appreciate that you have a reason to be mad, but think what the people who list 911's must feel like these days. Your friend has a beautiful car, in a great color. Maybe it won't meet reserve and he can try selling in a different arena..or maybe the interest will be there and the last half hour will bring an onslaught of bidding!)
(The problem is, of course, that BaT is the big fish and they do what they want, and if you don't like it, then you don't like it. I'm not impressed that they decided to let auctions close on the weekends now; I think that really dilutes interest when an auction ends on a Sunday or a Holiday, and of course the seller has no say in the timeframe. But they still only charge 5%, so there is that!)

Yeah, but have they ever listed two 911s, same year, same interior, same color, and same wheels before at the same time????

True but they have a huge incentive for cars to sell, it’s how they make their coin whether the sale actually goes through or not.

They usually try to stagger them slightly for maximum interest. It sounds like someone dropped the ball…maybe the auction manager transposed the two cars into one on his schedule.

That's what I'm saying... listing them at the same time just devalues both cars....

The yellow one listed by 911r last week hammered at 110. Rising tide raises all boats?
Edit; I just looked at the site and yes, your friend has every right to be angry; I wonder why they would do that? Edit; There was interest at the end, and some pretty spirited bidding.
