Ok, my turn: What the heck is this?

I found this in a field 25 odd years ago and have never figured out what it really is. The Pelican brain trust has pulled off some pretty cool identifications so maybe someone here knows?

It's mostly aluminum but the spinner/slider is stainless sheet. Almost looks like a flare or a rocket? But then it has those holes to some sort of chamber in the nose. Thoughts?

I think it's a gas flue. The sort you would have on a gas heater that is vented out (horizontally) through a wall.

Mind you, every second thing I say is wrong.

I keep it on my desk, it's just a childhood curio that has followed me around through life. A reminder of simpler times finding random junk in fields

That "Willie Pete" could light up an area, make the night time seem like day. Hopefully you weren't caught on the latrine....
