Sounds a little F1ish.

There was nothing worse at the track, than the sound of a Mazda engine. Bwaaaaappp… Bwaaaaappp… Bwaaaaappp!!!!

berettafan 06-07-2022 04:17 PM

Saw some in person at a Rolex event years back and hated the sound. This one is a bit sweeter though.

masraum 06-07-2022 04:31 PM

Very nice, and yes, kind of like an F1 car in slow motion with a noisy gearbox thrown in for good measure.

Sounds a lot like my old miata!
:D

1.2 liter at 12k RPM and no exhaust muffler?

MAS956 06-07-2022 06:34 PM

12k rpm and 125 ft lbs of torque....

David 06-07-2022 08:55 PM

We used to run a three rotor in a ‘58 sprite autocross car. Completely different sound to the ear splitting twin rotors.

they spin 4 k rpm with 3 sparks per revolution so the tack said 12k the shaft spin 4k
yes the sounds of the twin is nasty a turbo helps a lot

I had a rx4

ted 06-08-2022 05:51 AM

A few years ago the Mazda crew told me that there was only a very few remaining 4 rotors.
Back when it was Mazda Laguna Seca raceway, Mazda would display and run 3 of the vintage 4 rotor race cars.
I liked when Jeremy Barnes was driving this RX7 4 rotor.

I found a video of it! This must be just after my friend sold it when it still had the 3-rotor. Last I heard it had a 13B 2-rotor turbo.

Turn up the volume!

Damn that is cool!!!

Really? I had no idea. That's interesting. I'd always assumed it was actually 12k. But now that seems more like marketing BS.

The shaft spins at full rpm (we ran 9k on the 3 rotor and 10k at nationals) while the rotors turn 1/3 of crank rpm.

I always love the sound of a rotary.

Ya'll are nuts.

TimT 06-24-2022 11:37 AM

Worlds smallest rotary engine.. single rotor

2.4cc

0.7 hp

And slightly annoying when running

Back in the day my oldest son and I at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Top class prototypes were V12 Ferrari 333SP , Jim Downing Mazda Kudzu and Panoz Batcar with large V8 . One of the best ways on earth to ruin your hearing 😁

Shaun @ Tru6 06-24-2022 03:40 PM

Sounds like a stoned high school kid's drawing of a super car while in detention.

24 hours of Daytona in 1984 or 1985, three of the damn things pitted in the spot just behind us. There was seemingly always one of them in the pits and they made a hell of a racket. Hated them then, hate them now…

John Rogers 06-25-2022 07:34 AM

This car had a 4 rotor engine in it and the owner had brought it from Japan where he had raced it in a series they had over there. I was soooooo loud at full bore on the main straight at Willow Springs I had to put on ear protection even at my trailer parking area! It was super high pitched.

A sound reminiscent of the Matra/Ligier driven by Jacques Laffite at Long Beach in the late '70's. Loudest car I ever heard, reverberating off the walls, going up the hill on Pine Street to Ocean Blvd. 1.5 liter, 12 cylinder turbo, 1000 b.h.p., I believe.

slow&rusty 06-26-2022 02:35 AM

Love the sound of a ported 13B !

David 03-21-2025 09:41 AM

My friend's son just uploaded these old super 8 videos of his 12A rotary Sprite from probably the early 90's. Pretty cool sound!

When I left GM they let me have one of the rotors out of their experimental engine project. They had abandoned the project and were scraping all the "junk." It was one of their PMT parts manufacturing experiments (made of powdered steel), as well as an engine design project. I don't know if it was PMT just because it was a prototype, or that they actually planned to make them from powdered metal. My first wife and I had it in our living room as an "objet d'art" for a while.
When we split up, for some reason, she wanted to keep the damn rotor. I wanted out so bad that I just said yeah, whatever.
Wish I still had it.

The guy that built my 250 put one of those in an RX7. Apparently you can get silly hp out of it with turbos.

Moto gp and the superbikes that rev to 15k rpm.

The down shifting at 1:50 was beautiful.

If your close to them on the exhaust side, they will make your hearing go away real quick. What you are hearing on this video is nothing compared to real life.

Amen.

Spent a weekend at the Daytona 24 hour race (84 or 85) with 3 of the godforsaken things pitted next to us. Hated every minute of it. During the race, there seemed to always be one of the damn things in the pits at any given moment.

Hated them ever since. A plague upon racing. Anything but a rotary.

tdw28210 03-23-2025 06:00 AM

If you like rotatory engines, how about 12?
