Mattresses

Bough my current bed, Stearns & Foster in 2001, has lasted until about 6+ months ago. Excellent mattress. Need a new one. Can only sleep on the sides.

Friend got a Leesa 6 months ago, doesn't recommend it, center has sagged. Old GF had a pricey memory foam bed, hated it. Looked at Helix online, not sure.

Considering another S&F. Anyone have a Helix or similar? I'm side sleeper who likes a firm mattress. Hard to beat a 20 year mattress for $3K but these new hybrid beds seem interesting.

My son has a 3 yr old Leesa that is really good (I'd rate it close to our...) I have a Tempur-Pedic that I absolutely love. Thing about a mattress is, everyone has a different taste. Go flop on a few and see what feels right.

Ya gotta take a gf and go try a few out.... remember to grab yer clothes as yer leaving :D.

Do you have an Original Mattress Factory near you ? Most of their stores ( but not all ) are also a manufacturer at the store . They have sample mattresses in the store for you to try out . Because they make them right there they can customize as you wish . We have purchased from them in the past and was always happy .

We have a Saatva that we are happy with. Just a basic mattress we have had for five years.

I tried that but my wife got mad.

I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but I have a firm memory foam mattress from Amazon on a cheap boxspring at my work apartment. I really like it.

We’ve had our Select Comfort since 2006, very happy with it. Being able to adjust firmness is nice.

We have a Sterns and Foster California King sized bed, bought in 2004 and still comfy!!! Best mattresses we have ever had.

We got a Kingsdown Chardonnay bed about a year ago, and so far it is the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in.

It is a hybrid bed, but the topper is not the typical foam they use that heats up with your body temp. It is quite comfortable.

Saatva's come up a lot in winning mattress reviews. So far Wirecutter (NYT) is the only trusted source I could find though.

The Best Innerspring Mattresses

Right now I'm considering Zoltan's Kingsdown but in the Malbec.

Also looking at Royal Pedic. https://royalpedic.com/

This would be a $6K bed but it would be the last bed I buy I'm sure. I like to see the "little" things that the very rich buy. Bath towels, certain clothing... basic essentials that are relatively cheap but something an 8 figure person might own. A Royal Pedic might be one of these things and may be worth it. I'm not a big house kind of person but experiential. Experiencing sleeping on a handmade mattress may actually be worth the cost of entry.

At the opposite end, Costco has a S&F for $1K which I would consider a 3 to 5 year mattress. not great value. Certainly nothing compared to mine lasting forever.

Don’t get a Sleep Number bed. I hate ours as it’s not ever firm enough. I sometimes wake up with a back ache.

gprsh924 06-22-2022 06:02 PM

Absolutely love our hybrid mattress:

Keep in mind that at 16.5" height, the Malbec is a very tall mattress. You may need to either get a half-height box springs, or opt for their 1 inch board in lieu of a boxspring. Even with the Chardonnay, we opted just for the 1 inch board - otherwise the bed would have been too tall for Mrs. Z-man.

Tuft and Needle. www.tn.com

I like firm mattresses and I’m a side sleeper.

Worth checking out. They have a 100 night money back guarantee, no questions asked.

If you don’t like it, they refund your money and you donate the mattress or throw it away. They don’t want it back.

I’m replacing my guest room with one very soon.

Bill Douglas 06-22-2022 10:25 PM

GF said when she goes to bed she likes it hard and stiff.

So I went to the futon shop and got one of those mattresses that's like sleeping on a rock.

Ha, I do everything for her and she still looks disappointed, duh.

Shifman.

My wife and I got a Tempurpedic with their new cooling layers. It still warms up at night but it's not nearly as bad as they used to be. Very, very comfortable for sleeping and they last basically forever, but they're not great for bedroom activities.

About 4 years now. I used to not care too much when I would travel and sleep in a different bed, now I can't wait to be back in my own.

The memory foam top provides a nice slight cushion, but the innerspring is still very firm underneath, I really think it is the best of both worlds.

When we shopped for this bed, we went into Mattress Firm and laid in every single bed they had. We did it blind to price and picked this one. It may or may not have been the most expensive one in the store, but it was worth it.

john70t 06-23-2022 09:04 AM

I had a hand-me-down 20" memory foam and couldn't get up out of bed one day.
Sat there for half an hour trapped. I'd sunk deep into it my back was seriously tweeked. It hurt to even try.
Plus the thing stank.

A cheap Ikea box spring has been good for a couple of years.
Not the best but acceptable.

Great information, thank you! Definitely added to the list.

Also in the running now, thank you Paul. Bloomingdales is having a sale, one example:

Shifman Metropolitan Stanton Pillow Top Plush Mattress Collection - 100% Exclusive

Shaun @ Tru6 06-25-2022 05:31 PM

Went to Bloomingdales tonight to try out the Shifman mattresses. This is going to be tough and will be going back with my pillows. Laid on both handmade and machine made versions, pillow tops, bare mattresses, ultra firm, firm and medium firm. The winner of all of them may be the machine made ultra firm (it was like plywood but REALLY comfortable plywood) with a separate thin pillow top. I have no idea who would sleep on it without a pillow top added on. And I love a firm mattress.

All beds felt great and that was part of the problem. I could sleep on all of them. Even with the 45% sale, the handmades were PRICEY. But they are 20 year mattresses.

I asked about the Stearns & Fosters and the woman helping me said they were for guest rooms. LOL! I laid on a few and they felt fine. I think quality has gone down with them with so many sagging reviews over a few years. Mine too 20 to sag.

Tried a Kluft too which was nice.

Looking forward to trying Garrett's Beautyrest. Have until July 4 for the Bloomingdale sale. I am pretty sure my favorite mattress isn't made. Firm with one pillow top. The handmade beds have pillow tops on both sides for flipping. Apparently if I get a base vs. a box spring, the handmades will be firmer which I like.

I can't believe how lucky I got with my old mattress.
