Low budget car import....

Got the itch to import another car from Japan. After the kei suzuki carry and 25% import duty. I am gravitating towards something a little bigger and not hit with the truck tax. To be able to informal import these things myself the car has to cost less than $2500. Which leaves me a few lower end choices. Here's the list of beaters. Which ones you like?

Rusted 200k km suzuki jimny. 4wd standard, but cbp might complain about the rust and require steam cleaning.
Suzuki alto (kind of a joke in themselves)
Mazda 121. 60k kms
Mitsubishi Pajero Mini 2wd standard

Please!!!

Don't get the Mitsubishi Pajero Mini 2wd standard. My niece got one and it cost her a fortune for the spare parts. It's nothing like the regular Mitsubishi Pajero.

What about the older Jimny's with the 660cc two stroke motor and the Willy's style front grille (late 70s early 80s)?

I don't know how many websites you are across and many of them are listing the same vehicles but try also goo-net-exchange.com and beforward.jp
I've bought from both and they are good. Avoid picknbuy24.com as they are dishonest

The only issue is those are more expensive and can't be informally imported.

This guy is where all of the cars I listed are from, and he seems to be pretty responsive. Diyatajapan.co.ltd/Japan used car import exporter

If this one works out and I can double my dollars. I might have to take this guy up on his auction offers in Japan.

This is the place where I bought the Suzuki Carry. Little higher prices but cleaner trucks.

Slightly off thread, but can someone summarize the import process? Lots of people do this. It can't be that challenging.

Pretty simple to do an informal import on a 25 year old vehicle. Maybe 6 pieces of paper total. BOL, receipt, cbp import form, epa exempt form, dot exempt form. Pay your duty at the port. Hire some dock worker with a twic for 60 bucks to pick up the vehicle from the secure area. And off you go.

Dmv will take the Papwork with translation and give you a title. After they hit you for more taxes.

Why do Trabant's have heated rear windows?....To keep your hands warm when you're pushing it in the winter!

1.5x car price. But you're not gonna find clean low kms vehicles in US. Japan also has higher level of inspection and maintenance than the US.
