You need a cam because the force needed to lift the door increases as the door goes higher. And it needs to compensate for the changing angle from the cable to where it attaches at bottom of the door.

But you gotta find someone to draw the cam for you...

It is neat that math can work around such a stupid design - how did you think it would work?

There is a handle on the bottom of the door, canst see because the ladder is in the way. When fully open that handle lines up perfectly vertical with the 3rd stringer out from the house.

I'd mount the winch on the inside face of that stringer. The hinge for the door will be lower than the winch so I think there shouldn't be an issue with the angle. I'll rig up a quick simple pully and rope and validate by hand.

So the idea is winch operated by remote. Lower cable, attach to handle, open it, winch holds it open, when done lower it, unhook cable, retract cable into rafter so it's not visible when not in use.

Wouldn't you like to forgo a winch, just have a weight balanced system like how old window sash weights worked? If you got the weight and cam shape correct you could have it so the pulley friction held the door in place. Put a wood handle over the cable with crimps on either end and you could open/close naturally.

First off, I love your setup, and your way of thinking about this.

Secondly, you know you are in a forums filled with Porsche enthusiasts when you get three pages discussing how to over-engineer a complex solution to a simple problem!

Carry on, and I am looking forward to your final solution, with the required video of the cover opening and closing...

masraum 06-28-2022 06:12 AM

I'm pretty sure the best solution is some Decepticon technology!

rusnak 06-28-2022 06:33 AM

You could just adapt some junkyard Macan clamshell hood hinges and use gas struts to open the door. To close, you can use a pole to attach a pull rope to the bottom of the door. A simple catch will keep it closed.

vmax 06-28-2022 07:12 AM

Something like this small anchor winch could work for this.

rusnak 06-28-2022 07:43 AM

Thinking about it more, I would just go with gas struts and get out the ladder to close it.

There are roll-up options with single touch remote though:

Z-man 06-28-2022 10:42 AM

Since the TV is set rather high, you should also install an arm that can extend and lower via remote control. Extra points if you get the TV to spin 360's as it comes out of its 'garage'

You will also want to add hidden surround speakers (SONOS) around your sitting area that pop-up when the TV opens.

Have you decided what your inaugural movie will be? I would suggest something like LeMans, Grand Prix, or Ford vs. Ferrari.

My guess is that it'll get closed 5% as frequently if a ladder is required than if not.

Good call on all of the above.

My vote is to make the inauguration a marathon of all of the above, then add Rush, and at the end, Days of Thunder, Wraith, and Corvette Summer. :D

Gas struts on either side to open it.

Use a dowel with a hook on it to bring it down.

Manually latch it in the closed position

Maybe the box can be built so the TV just drops down out of it, with a hinged bottom?

^ this. Elegant, simple, and you can hide all the mechanicals within the box.

But I would still want to see it rotate around just for effect.

It does spin, but the wall would have to be coved to allow that. OTOH, the box can be built in to the roof overhang structre. There is a swing-down model too.

rusnak 06-28-2022 12:31 PM

^ Thinking about it even more, the box can be mounted to tracks so it can slide outward from the wall, allowing the drop down mount to spin around. That would be my choice, actually.

Plus reading comprehension not the greatest. :D

You want something your better half can use.

A remote operated pulley system.

Got it - (about 15 posts ago)....;)

Carry on and look forward to your updates! SmileWavy

stomachmonkey 06-28-2022 06:49 PM

Maybe this belongs in a "Why Men Hoard Things" thread or the craigslist garage sale thread.

Sitting here googling various winch systems, bare AC motors, pulley parts and I remembered something I'd gotten from a neighbor a couple of years back.

Brand new in box never used. My wife asked "what are you going to do with that?"

Well maybe I now have an answer.

All the parts I need are there and can be manually operated right away and later I can add a standard wall mounted hand crank or a motor and pulley if that even becomes necessary.

Won't a canoe block the TV?

It's intentionally high for visibility. Think TV in sports bar. It'll be on a wall mount that extends, tilts, swivels.

Have BT Rock speaker sets for the yard already. The brand will daisy chain up to 99 individual speakers.

Since it has a clear view from the jacuzzi probably be used mostly for Football and porn.

sc_rufctr 06-28-2022 09:35 PM

Guys this is the easiest/simplest fix. Move the hinge to the right side of the cover. It will then open against the existing brick wall. Problem solved without spending a dime.

I really like that setup but I would have put the piano hinge on the right side.

Have you thought about using an articulated mount for the TV so you can pull it out and angle it as needed? I recently installed on for a friend and it worked out great.

LOL, still laughing.

A bi-fold opening to the right was originally considered but ultimately dismissed.

The wall faces East so gets full sun from 7am till 3 pm.

It’s TX, the sun is brutally strong which is something you may have familiarity with where you live.

Flipping up should keep the glare off and mitigate weird shadows from the pergola awning.

One rope (tied to the handle), one small pulley centered behind the 3rd cross piece, and one tie-off on the side. And hire a pool boy with the $$$ I saved ya :D

I am the pool boy. At least for the first summer.

I've never had to maintain a pool before and I'm one of those people that insists on knowing how to do the job that I would hire someone else to do.

How else am I to know whether or not the pool really needs a blinker fluid top off.

911 Rod 06-29-2022 08:18 AM

What about an arm/hinge that hold the table up like on this chair, but for both sides. Ya, you'd still probably need a big stick.

Some reference for all those suggesting the pole method. Yes it will work but it’s less than ideal.

It’s hard to understand just how big and high off the ground this thing is.

My wife, who needs to be able to open it without me.

She’s 5’1”

stomachmonkey 06-29-2022 03:44 PM

And a gratuitous yard pic.

Still a work in progress, running more power throughout the yard today.

The pool is a party pool. We noticed whenever we went to other peoples homes for pool parties the adults all stand around the sides and no one really swims.

This pool is 4.5 ft at its deepest so even my wife can walk across the whole thing with a cocktail in hand.

Far left is the tanning ledge, far right the jacuzzi. In between them is a love seat. The coping around the tanning ledge is bar height so you can stand in the pool and have a place to put a drink.

Mid left is a 4x4 stone table that seats 8-10 on all 4 sides. We sit there in the evenings and play board games.

Across from that is the waterfall, off in this pic, with a bench under it that seats another 5-6.

All in with the jacuzzi there is seating for 20 people.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1656546228.jpg

Dude, she can barely send an email.

She does however make the most perfectly awesome steak.

They truly are a thing of beauty.

And the kids, not so bad either.

And she also keeps my natural stupidity from killing myself at least once a week so I'll let her slide on the drone and email.

She's also fiercely loyal and will cut you in a heartbeat if you F with me.

I picked most of that up at dinner. Will have to come down for the steak, and transmission, just hired 2 techs so might be possible when your temps are reasonable.

I still vote for a linear actuator. I use one on my snowblower for chute control. They hold up to bad weather, they are simple to install. Often used to raise very heavy items, and clearly you have power behind the Tv so it’s a no brainer. You can even use a wireless remote to raise/lower the cover.
