Tough road but worth it.

Getting wifey on board is the hard part.
Enough is never enough.

So frustrating.

This is such a personal evaluation and decision making process that there is no right answer. You're the only one who can truly make the right decision but even then, things can (and most likely will) change. Are you considering that the best laid plans of mice and men don't always work out? You should.

But you asked the question, so here's 2 cents from someone who is already retired and has been for 5 years.

Make sure your wife is 1000% with you with this decision. If you have to "get her on board" or try to convince her, that smells like potential trouble down the road to me. Personally, I'd make sure it was a JOINT decision. There can be no doubt on her part. These are the best decisions in a marriage.

Your kids are still very young an have a long way to independence. College expenses or not, sometimes they need help (spelled "money") later on in life. I guarantee it. Will you be able to help them?

People make the mistake of thinking their nest egg only has to last until they're gone. Not true. It has to last until the last spouse passes away. These can be two wildly different dates, sometimes separated by decades.

Investment markets and the related returns change. RE values do not always provide a consistent upward trend. The stock market was out of control for over a decade and now is volatile. Is your portfolio well protected? Will you be continuing to invest after retirement or simply living off your nest egg? What happens when the nest egg devalues? Inflation? Things will be getting more expensive as the years pass. Will your income cover those increases?

Also, bear in mind that your living expenses will not go down after you retire. You may think they will, but they won't. In fact, statistics show that expenses actually INCREASE for people after retirement because they start to do things they've been putting off. In my own case, ours went up slightly and have stayed fairly steady for 5 years.

Lastly, the Europeans, Canadians and many other countries in the world retire much earlier than we do. I think they're onto something and maybe you are too. Just make sure you have way more money then you think you will need or conversely, believe money isn't important. Nothing worse than being broke and old.

Good luck!

Yup he sure did. He then followed it up with a very impressive humble brag!

That said, I think he genuinely has a problem. We thought it was financial but in reality it is marital. My opinion remains the same:

That is a game changer. I rescind my vote and say NO. If you do get her to agree and then she isn't happy it is not going to be fun. Remember the old adage "When momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"

I will add he needs to get marital counseling before it ends up with two attorneys fighting over who gets the Maserati.

What are you so busy doing?

It has only been a few months, but here are a few that come to mind (that I have been doing recently).

Travelling. Drove across country and back twice. Flew once. Made many trips of 8-12 hours (each way). Visited young grandkids several states away many times. Made sure my wife got to spend a lot of time with elderly relatives (multiple trips/visits). Visited (or invited to visit) people that I have not seen in decades. Lots of things that I have delayed for many years. Improving or fixing my house and my vacation houses. Have been fixing some of my cars (replaced a leaking coolant overflow tank in my Cayenne and got an oxygen sensor replaced by a guy with a lot skinnier arms than mine (had been bad for a while). Replaced the seals in my '74 911 opening vent windows. Replaced all the seals/felt in the doors. and fixed windows. Ordered a new light switch, but not replaced it yet.

Had a roof and gutters put on a rental and fixed the roof on a vacation house. Redid the landscaping and fixed the auto sprinklers at one vacation house. Fixed the broken A/C or heat in three houses. Helped my daughter and son-in-law (and grandkids) move. Helped them check out the new house by visiting it (was hundreds of miles from where they live). Drove their extra car to the new location for them. Cut down between 50 and 100 trees on my properties, sawed them up and hauled the mess away. Sold a rental house. Paid off two rental houses. Started emptying out my mother's house (she passed almost 2 years ago) and prepping her property for sale. Began scanning her old photos (as well as my grandmothers and a great aunt's...all dead) into files and sending to relatives. Started cleaning out my garage for the first time in 10 years.

Took a massive amount of stuff to Goodwill. Ran trespassers off one of my properties that were living there (in tents) without permission. Tracked down and purchased a bunch of ammo for my weapon collection (that accidentally fell off a boat in the river).

Had time to watch the market closely enough so that I pulled my money out before the recent slide. Took a hard look at my finances and made sure everything was in order. Straightened out an error in my final compensation from my old employer. Even helped my old boss that called because he had a massive problem...and stayed up all night to write him a paper that saved his (and my old organization's) bacon.

Watched a lot of TV...went out to eat a lot. Went on a diet and lost 10 lbs. Started working out again and am back to a pretty respectable workout and my muscle tone has improved greatly. Posted a lot on Pelican. Looked for a new vacation house. Started looking for an old muscle car since I cannot find another Porsche fixer-upper I like.

Slept late, stayed up late. Kept my 3 acre lawn better mowed/trimmed (weekly when I am home instead of every two weeks). Installed some video cameras in one of my vacation houses. Got a Roku to supplement our TV.

Visited my wife's elderly father (fine man) this morning. Took photos of a bear in my yard today...and grilled steaks for my wife, my son and his wife this evening. Also made home made potato salad and pico de gallo. Made fresh green beans and corn on the cob that I was able to find time to buy at the farmer's market. Talked to my daughter on facetime and told her how to "fix" her A/C this morning. Seems to have worked tonight. Hanging some gutters tomorrow if it does not rain..

Eventually hope to get enough done so that I can go fishing. Certainly not bored yet.

Thanks once again for all the opinions.
Well, at least most of them!
Didn't mean to punk anybody; just didn't want to get too personal on a public forum.
But the plan is to use up some savings, build a rental cabin, then save up and build another, and so on.
Not sure when I will officially retire, but mentally I am already gone!!

Wifey and I get along GREAT!!
But we grew up differently.
She is a spoiled rotten princess that grew up wealthy, and only had to ask to get whatever she wanted.
I grew up a bit different.
She isn't used to somebody like me, and I am not used to somebody like her.
We are slowly gravitating towards each other, but still have a ways to go!
Never a dull moment!
