Today's Lingo...

I try to catch the UM podcast whenever I can. It's on every afternoon for an hour and the man running it is 55 years old and very likeable/knowledgeable about UM sports.

Today's podcast was titled 'Smash It or Pass It'...meaning that he would give 10 diff scenarios for the upcoming football season and listeners/viewers could comment on and pick smash(as in like it) or pass (as in don't like it)

Immediately when it went on air...their were comments about his title. 'Smash it or Pass It'

Here is a summary....
"please edit your title..we have teen-age boys listening/viewing this podcast."
"change your title...don't want my sons hearing this."
plus a few others that I can't remember.

What am I missing?

"smash" is also used in the same way as "plow", "bang", "have sex with", etc... (you need to watch more Letterkenny )

It's also silly, because on YT, it's very common to say "smash that like button" but in that case, it's being used in a different way.

THe people complaining are being silly, IMO.

The podcaster said that he got the idea for the title from Tic-Tok. He had no idea that it was offensive.

Are we supposed to follow the rules of 'the new lingo/talk' now?

I thought "Smash" mean an activity done with enthusiasm, energy and speed. An example being "We bought a new house that needed renovating. We absolutely smashed it in three weeks."

But what would I know, I'm just an old git from the coast.

Yeah, 'smash' is a sexual innuendo.

Don't use that at work

It's not offensive except maybe when used in very specific context. The word smash (like most words) has multiple meanings, some hardly related to others.

"Smash it or pass it" in reference to sports teams is not offensive.

"Smash it or pass it" followed by a series of photos of women could probably be considered offensive.

Technically, something is offensive only if you think it is. So it's entirely possible that there are women out there that would gladly provide their photos to an activity like that and wouldn't be offended at all.

Most of you have probably seen this before. IMO, portions of it cannot be stated often enough these days.

Quote:
And political correctness is the oppression of our intellectual movement so no one says anything anymore in case somebody else gets offended"

"What happens if you say that & someone gets offended?"
Well they can be offended.

What's wrong with being offended?
When did sticks and stones may break my bones stop being relevant?

Isn’t that what you teach children for God sakes.
That's what you teach toddlers.

He called me an idiot.
Don't worry about it. He's a dick.

Now you have adults going:
I was offended. I was offended, and I have rights.

Well so what? Be offended. Nothing happens

You're an adult, grow up, deal with it.

I was offended!
I don't care.

Nothing happens when you're offended.
I went to the comedy show & the comedian said something about the Lord (And I was offended). And when I woke up in the morning, I had leprosy.

Nothing happens.
I want to live in a democracy, but I never want to be offended again.
Well you're an idiot.

How do you make a law about offending people? How do you make an offense to offend people?
Being offended is subjective. It has everything to do with you as an individual or collective or group or society or community, your moral conditioning, your religious beliefs. What offends me may not offend you.

And you want to make laws about this?
I'm offended when I see boy bands for God sake.

It's a valid offense. I'm offended. They're corporate shills posing as musicians to further a modeling career, and, frankly, I'm disgusted.

But what am I going to do, call the cops?

Hello it's me again.
There on the tele this time.

Five of them, that's it.

Yep white suits, dancing like girls.
That’s them.

Five minutes
I'll be out the front traumatized, bye

Just so long as you did it in the privacy of your garage and there were no teenage boys that saw, you're probably OK. But give it another few years and that could change.

"Shag it or Bag it"

I hope someday we stop letting the pearl-clutchers win all the arguments.

I'd love to see the Sofa King furniture truck in the neighborhood again.

Those people complaining do seem a bit naive. Don't they realize that any kid with a smartphone already has easy access to all the hard-core porn they want?

^^^ That's exactly what I was thinking.....but the podcaster had to address the posts.
It left him in an uncomfortable position.

It's unfortunate that you've got to cater to morons.
