Martin is super worried about the finish that goes on the top/sides/bottom of their guitars even saying it depends on which wood is used and how thick the finish is. I bought one of their new ones and it has a satin finish that I wanted to make into a high gloss sprayed lacquer finish. I talked to a fellow (sounded old to me) and he noted that if I layed down 10 to 12 coats of nitro cellulose finish it would be like putting a plastic bag all over the guitar and really cut down the sound!

I am lucky, I still have about 8 quart cans of the "outlaw lacquer" that you can not but in CA any longer! I got them the last time I had paint work done at Garage Los Ponchos in Tijuana BC as they were still using it BUT the rumor was that it was going to be discontinued there as well as CA?! Now it it is!
