Lets talk about Towels

Taking up swimming again.
Place used to provide towels years ago.
Wish I knew what kind they were.
Worked better than anything I own.

Any towel guru's here?
What to go for?

In order to be a really hoopy frood, you gotta know where your towel is.

Turkish cotton towels seem to spread the water around while Egyptian cotton towels absorb the water.

My wife bought these smallish lightweight towels a few years back. I immediately complained that not everyone in the house is 5'0" and can dry off with a hand towel. Well i had to eat my words, these things are crazy good at soaking up water and you don't feel like you're wrestling a blanket. I will do my best to remember and check the brand tonight.

Do you use fabric softener when washing or softener sheets when drying your towels? It often does reduce their absorbency.

Some towel manufacturers recommend that periodically (about every six weeks), that after your regular washing cycle, you wash them a second time using vinegar instead of soap (to remove soap residue and make them soft and absorbent as they were when new).

Nope, no softener. Interesting about the vinegar.

I think that's got to be more about how the towel/material has been treated than the type of cotton. I know that the strands of Egyptian cotton are longer (and thinner?) but I don't think that would have much impact on absorbancy. I do know that certain things when new suck at absorbing, but then after a couple of washes, that usually changes.

I have recently tested 4 towels in order of preference:

Missoni Rex

Riley Spa

Frontgate Resort

Parachute Turkish Cotton

I highly recommend the first 2. Frontgate was nice. Parachute was OK.

This is precisely like what the pool had.
I remember bringing my own towel at first on account of not thinking too highly of what I saw on offer.
Then one time I forgot, so used theirs.
I never used mine again.(At the pool.)

Do you apply the tea directly to the crabs or drink it? Does it kill them or just make them stop itching?

Tobra 08-01-2022 07:10 PM

You drink it until you don't mind the itchiness.

acetic acid is not bad as a solvent.

Put it in a plastic bag and zip tie it on your hard water encrusted shower head

If you have dry skin on your heels, soak your feet in 25% vinegar for 10 minutes before you take a shower and hit them with a pumice stone. You have to put lotion on after doing this.

I like to line dry my towels, my wife hates that.

berettafan 08-01-2022 08:51 PM

Sorry, meant steamed crabs!

crb07 08-01-2022 09:00 PM

Bamboo is the best.

I think (guessing) the reason why hotel towels are so fluffy and VERY absorbent is because they are washed crazy hot and that washes out any oils from the fabric.

jessyrich 08-02-2022 12:38 AM

I like Turkish Cotton towels.
Once we went camping without towels and had to buy them in the supermarket on the way to our destination. No name towels turned out to be very good too.
If i remember it right it was in in shoprite. Maybe you check this site and see if the customer service can provide you some information about their products?

911 Rod 08-02-2022 12:09 PM

Did you know there is a front and back to towels and they need to be hung with the front facing out?
My wife knows and apparently I'm a slow learner.

Lol

Tervuren 08-04-2022 11:38 AM

I looked them up, they look similar to a towel I could already use.
Finally spent over an hour in the water today.
What I can say is the towel I brought is too big.
It is precisely the "wimpy" size that is part of the equation.
It's like loading a race car up with ballast it doesn't need to have a regular sized bath towel.
