Label maker recommendation
I'm looking at getting a label maker. I figure I've advanced beyond the masking tape/sharpie methods and would like something a bit more refined. Something to label my hardware bins and boxes, etc.
Seems Dymo has several different models to choose from. I'd prefer stand-alone operation, as some manufacturer models operate via bluetooth with a phone app to connect. Also, some models have PC connectivity - which might be of use for when my wife chooses to relabel all of her storage boxes. The Dymo tape comes in 23' lengths and 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 width (for models that can use them) and the price doesn't seem too unreasonable. Any particular brands and models that you might recommend?

I always preferred the Dymo where you turned the wheel, squeezed it and it embossed a letter into the tape. After embossing what you wanted, you cut it off, peeled off the backer and stuck it to what you wanted.
Just kidding. That little device was horrendous because of mistyping, etc. |

Check out my "toolbox tour" thread to see one in action...

These are the two I use.
One creates a plastic label - the other a paper one. They both do a good job! The yellow one is as old as the hills but still works great! You already know this but in addition to opinions and feedback here - You Tube would probably be helpful in gaining more intel on these devices. Good luck, Mark!

Get a PC connected Dymo. You'll be amazed how often you want to set up the labels on the computer first. You can do multiple fonts, dual lines of text, pictures/figures, all sorts of stuff. Also, it's far easier and more efficient to put together all of your labels at once, then print a 2 foot long string and cut it apart...it STINKS trying to do that with the tiny keyboard on the machine itself, but it's trivial using the computer.
I have a Dymo Ryno 6000 at work, it's the industrial line. Mine has built in electrical schematics, pre-designed label sizes for breaker boxes, all sorts of things that are very specific for a technician, and none of which I ever find a need for ![]()

Reminds me of the series of Progressive commercials where they try to train folks not to be their parents. The dymo label maker is so 1960s...as is labelling one's things. It seems like most folks could type up an inventory of their stuff and the box it is in. Then they could just look at the list on their computer...or print it out. Better yet, a searchable database.

I have a Brother PT-70. It was around $20 I think. Stand alone typewriter keyboard and small screen, no Bluetooth, and operates on AAA batteries.
Black ink on white tape. Looks very good and for the price can't beat it. I bought tape from another brand and it is a PITA because it is harder to get backing off, actually has a center line which makes 2 backing papers lengthwise. The Brother tape was great.

A fairly high reviewed Dymo seems to be out of stock everywhere. Amazon shows a late Aug to mid Sep delivery. I'll keep looking.

My buddy uses this one. Can also print on heat shrink tube for wires. A win win in my book.
