Like most things in life, it's all about moderation. I don't want a big giant open space, but I do not want lots of tiny rooms. Strike a nice balance and everyone seems to be happy. The thing I will not abide, is multi-level flooring for the sake of just having step-ups and step-downs. Recipes for disaster. I have always owned 1 level homes and that is the way I like it. Fewer trip hazards and easier on the Dachshunds.

I'm trying to remember how many times I've lived in 1 story homes. The house that we were in when I was 3-5 was a small 1 story. I remember two times of 6-8 months that we lived in 1 story homes. I lived in an apt for a year when I was in college that was only 1 floor. I've probably live in about 15 different homes, townhouses, or apts over the years, and since I was 5, I think I've only spent 1-2 years living anywhere that I didn't have to go up at least a flight of stairs. I like multi-story, probably just because it's what I'm used to. I feel like there are benefits, like better for heating/cooling and more yard for the same sized lot.

Our old mini dachshund hurt his back and ended up needing surgery because of stairs in our old home. We didn't know that their backs were a common weakness.

Is it a concept if it's already built?

Then another craftsman bungalow on Fort Bliss (can't find an image). Circa 1900

Haha- saw your exact Hawaii house just a few weeks ago when the Schofield museum curator pointed out all the housing from that movie. Small world

Take a tour through a Frank Lloyd Wright house. They're the opposite of open floor plan. I think I'd shoot myself if I had to live in one. Great curb appeal though. I'll take the open floor plan.

We had some friends that had an open layout house back in the mid-late 80's. They loved it. I thought is was ugly as sin. The only thing I would like about open layout is if you are continually having meetings or parties of large groups. Then the layout makes sense but to each his own. I just wish my wife would stop watching those blankety blank home improvement/remodeling shows! She thinks we can remodel the bathroom for $1000 and have it done in a few weeks. "Chip and Joanna did this..." Yes dear, they didn't pay anything for the highly skilled labor, get custom furniture made for next to nothing in return for having the craftsman on the show, and have warehouses of stuff to use that they didn't have to pay retail to get.

We wanted open floorplans when we went shopping, and an open floorplan is why we bought this house. 1950 build, but a PO opened the kitchen, living room and dining room all into one grand room, which runs clear between the front and back of the house with only 2 pillars to break it up.
This room is 45 feet long and 20 feet wide:

The rest of the house is smaller classic rooms along a hallways, but the master suite was expanded, and the center of the original U-shaped floorplan was filled in with a 14x14 vaulted ceiling dining room, which is an impressive room by itself.
