The Marshall Tucker Band - Ugh

For Father’s Day my wife got us tickets to see the KY Headhunters, The Outlaws and The Marshall Tucker Band.

The MTB has been a favorite of mine as far back as I can remember. Saw them in a bar in Corpus Christie in the mid 90’s and they were awesome. Last night was a disaster. So disappointing. Doug Gray simply can no longer sing and shouldn’t try. I won’t describe it in detail but it was almost pathetic to watch…and hear. His musicians were individually very good but not cohesive…at all. Almost made me wonder why talented musicians would do this. As if Doug’s legacy is more important than the performance. I hate to admit it but we left early. As did many others. Apparently they have 100+ shows over the coming months. Save your money. |

![]() Conversely, my son's girlfriend got him tickets to see whatever Steely Dan calls themselves these days in Richmond, Virginia last month. Jack and I always did a Saturday recycle run and shopping-ex for the farm and the Dan was our choice of music...others as well, we're not cretins. He said it was spectacular. The older couple (ouch, that would have been me) couldn't believe he knew all the music. "You have no idea".

I saw the MTB in N.H. maybe 5-6 years ago. While still enjoyable, i could see the writing on the wall.

![]() I've been to a fair number of concerts and to this day - the MTB one in the mid 70's was the best one of all, for me. They were at the top of their game - and as such - untouchable.

It is truly a shame, but many older bands should not be performing live.

I recall seeing the video of the original members of Cream doing a show at Royal Albert Hall in 2005 and it was just sad. I know the band members may need the money, and some fans enjoy the nostalgia factor, but any objective evaluation of the performance of 60s and 70s rock bands 50 years later likely leads to disappointment. |

Mark Farner's American Band played last night at the Canyon Club here in town. Wished I could have seen it but had to work late. He's still got the chops.

It's just sad the the 2 other guys from GFR are such dicks. They even tried to sue him for using "American Band" in the name since Don Brewer wrote the song. Mark wrote 90% of their songs and sang lead on most. They were a great power trio back in the day.

It's kind of a shame that they aren't making the grade, but there are a lot of great bands on the B circuit that I don't like to miss when they come through. Asleep at The Wheel is one, Dave Alvin is another and Hot Tuna came through right before covid and had a great show. Big Head Todd you shouldn't miss just because, and The Rev. Horton Heat. Big Sandy and The Fly-Right Trio....

Saw Jethro Tull at The Grove in Anaheim roughly 20 years ago. Musically, the band was fine, but Ian Anderson’s vocals were horrible. It left a bad taste in my mouth for seeing aging rockers. ZZ Top is the only band I would consider still seeing.

Just recently saw Cheap Trick and Rod Stewart. I could barely make out which songs Cheap Trick we’re playing, but Rod Stewart sounded awesome- I suspect that some of these sound guys are functionally deaf and just crank the daylights out of the amps and that has more to do with how good the band sounds than their actual performance.
