Jaguar F-Type

Jonesing for a reliable hobby car for weekend use primarily. Prefer a two seater, ideally with 3 pedals, but not absolutely mandatory. Have never owned a Jag and can’t think of many better looking cars in that price range ($40-$60k used). Prefer a convertible. At 5’11”, 180 lbs, pretty sure I’ll fit. Model years 2014-2018 to keep the cost of entry reasonable.

BTW...would such a vehicle be eligible for agreed-value (Haggerty) insurance?

Have read a few reviews, all glowing. Still early in researching, but wondered if any first or second hand experience. Thanks!

My girlfriend bought a 2015 CPO F type. Coupe in the British racing green, auto trans. Dead sexy ride! Hers is not the R version but still very quick and fun to drive. I can't speak to long term reliability as she has not put that many miles on it. Being a CPO car brings some peace of mind. I pushed her to pay more from a dealer for that peace of mind however. I'm 5-10 at 170#s and find it very comfortable.

I can't speak to your insurance question. Have fun researching!

I was shopping for an F-Type.

Finally found one to check out.

The car is great to look at but I soured on it the minute I sat in it.

I'm only 5'8"

Car is made for taller people.

And even being a smaller driver it felt really claustrophobic.

I didn't dig it at all.

Went with an XK instead, more traditional GT Coupe and doesn't scream mid life crises as much as the F-Type.

It's really hard not to get the Supercharged R type cause it's 100 more ponies and Supercharged and we are car guys.

Based on the XK experience, the R is total overkill.

The NA is already a beast and makes for a better DD.

The NA suspension is right at the edge of feeling great without going over into R territory where it's just to stiff to be a comfortable DD.

We shall see on the reliability but Jags the last decade+ have been rock solid. No issues clocking 150k+ with normal maintenance.

I don't know production numbers on the F-Type but over the 8 years they built XK's there is only something like 55,000 out there with less than 25,000 in the US.

You'll almost never see yourself coming down the road in one.

There have a been a few threads about the F Type lately and I think one OT guy has an R and likes it.

They are sexy looking, but how can they be built for tall people but at 5-8 you felt confined? I am 6-4 and it is one of the reasons I like the 911, the interior room.

Waistline is high, roof is low, windows are small (rear view may as well not even exist), center console is large /bulky and protrudes into the cabin, transmission tunnel is tall and wide.

You feel like you are sitting in a hole and for me to be able to see out of it I had to raise the seat so high the ergonomics got weird, felt like I was sitting in an SUV, not a sports car. The driving experience just didn't feel right when it was set up in a way I could actually drive it.

The interior is larger than my 911 but felt smaller.

Yeah, that sounds a bit poorly planned.

Some people like that feel, was personally not my style.

To each his own.

Beautiful car though, wish it had worked for me but perfectly happy with the XK.

Feels a bit more mature, classier ride IMHO.

Reminds me a lot of my old 3000GT

not a dig in any way, stoma
but
the way you described the F-Type was the car expecting you to strap her on
have you considered a Jeep?

lol

I wouldn't classify me as claustrophobic but I don't particularly like confining spaces.

Take a 911. Ergonomically best car I've ever owned. You slide the seat forward or back and you are done. My brother is just under 6'4" and he is as comfortable in his 911 as I am in mine.

And I've also owned a Jeep, loved it.

XKE has an enormous transmission tunnel, low, legs out in front of you seating position, a lot less claustrophobic sounding.

XKF looks and sounds great

Some cars you just do not like. I did not care for the S2000, which sort of shocked me.

My advice is to go drive one. I have a 2020 SVR and it’s incredible. I have not had any issues with it. With a $60k budget, you should be able to find an older R version. You would just have to decide if you like more power (V8) with paddle shifters or a V6 with a clutch.

I fit fine at 6’ 2” and 200 lbs.
