Dealership prices

Need new tires and an alignment on the Cayenne. $300 for the alignment seems almost reasonable, double local chains. Since it has the air suspension, probably cheap insurance.

VIP Tire is mounting the 21s from TireRack for $33 each. Dealership price, $91. Each.

For the alignment I have to get under the truck and loosen/retorque all alignment hardware since they have noted it will be more for rusty suspensions. Which mine is.

Local tire shop scratched my wheels, and tore bushings on a 944. I didn't learn, brought them a 911 after I had just refreshed the suspension, and they stripped the upper mount.

I found local dealers didn't have mechanics that were trained on anything more than a few years old. When I asked about a timing belt on an 86 844 (in 1992) they didn't have any mechanics that had done one before.

Since then, I only went to specialty shops, that were PCA known and recommended.

Why do you need alignment?

Your tires wearing unevenly?

Pulling to one side?

I think this toe out. took about 10-12K miles to do this.

I'm gonna guess camber rather than toe out, Shaun.
My 325e would do that on the rears. All about the squat of the rear end.

Thanks Scott, I tried to find pics of toe out as someone mentioned it on RL. Nothing definitive. Anyway, RL'sters say that I should take it to an independent when I asked dealership vs. Firestone. Don't trust either of these for different reasons. And I know I'm going to get hurt going to the dealer. But tires are more expensive, at least that's my rationale.

Have never taken a car to the dealer and only took one, in my 38 years of ownership, to a repair shop, second car ever purchased, 240Z with bad rear wheel bearings. They couldn't figure it out and so, well, here I am.

The truck drives straight.

My present Accord had a toe problem in the rear. It'd leave a fine powder of rubber dust on the back bumper. Took it to Johnson's in Torrance and they straightened it right out. No more squealing when I push the car around on the garage floor and it rolls a lot easier too with NO rubber dusting of the bumper either. But that wear pattern didn't show on the rears of that car. Only on my BMW and you could see why they reco'd rotating the tires every 5k miles because of it. Once they wear like that it's hard to get them to stop, even with rotating.

Shaun.

Find a local indy Porsche shop with experience in Cayenne to align

Hopefully there is nothing bent and it's just adjustments

What was/is the tread wear rating on those worn tires Shaun?

220 Scott. I'm amazed I got 12K miles out of them. Phenomenal tires for the truck, handles like a 991 and I drive the hell out of it on a regular basis.

And it could be more like 14K miles. Have put 17K on it but swapped a set of winter wheels for it and figure I drove a few K over the winter.

12,000 miles, probably would have gotten double that if they wore evenly.

How often do you rotate your tires?

I agree with Toby, you might have gotten 24k if you were lucky and everything was perfect. I once put some similar Pilot's on our old Odyssey mini van but we didn't end up keeping it long enough to tell how they were going to wear. At 220 rating they're going to wear if things aren't right and you don't keep a close eye on them. It's really a shame as that's a good tire otherwise.

Were these on the front or back when you made that trip to pickup the VW?

I’m going to say it’s a toe problem. How’s the suspension/bushes?

I think the idea of a indie repair shop versus the dealer or Firestone/Goodyear is the way to go.

$33 for mounting a 21 inch tire is dirt cheap. A while back I had a thread on being charged $50 each for 18 inch tires.

220 tread wear rating is 16K miles Scott: 2.2 X 7200 = 15840 miles. And this tire was made for 3K lb 911s, not 6K lb Cayennes. And that's under "normal" driving. Anything more than 10K on a Cayenne, the way I drive, is magic. In fact it was probably the trip to Colorado that made them last so long.

And they do a good job, no problems with 4 sets of tires over the last several years.

Would take it to an independent if there was one close to me.
