Harbor Freight Compressors

It's time to move up to air power in the garage. Looking at this one in particular:

https://www.harborfreight.com/21-gallon-175-psi-oil-free-vertical-air-compressor-64858.html

Anyone have any experience with them?

I have found most 'oil free' compressors have not lasted long, other than my portable dewalt.

My next compressor is going to be one of the 'quiet' ones.

If you really need the CFM, they have a quiet one for $100 more.

https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-compressors-tanks/26-gallon-175-psi-ultra-quiet-vertical-shopauto-air-compressor-57336.html

With powerful battery tools, I haven't flipped on the big IR compressor in a long time, and use the smaller portable Dewalt. I just keep it for bead blasting.

Do you have tools that need that much air?

I looked at that slightly more expensive one too.

There are a few things I'd like to start dabbling in to. Paint, media blasting etc....Hell I'd like to fill my tires without the need to go to the gas station.

My neighbor has a ton of air tools that I have access to also (I've got a key to his garage).

Look into noise ratings.

I bought a HF oiled compressor a few years ago.
Put Royal purple in it, which quieted it slightly and better shows the oil level in the sight glass.
I still need ear muffs and to stay 10ft away when running or the teeth fillings roll like dice.
Cant run it at night.

The fact that it has wheels is a big plus, IMHO.

If you don't mind me piggy backing on your thread........

I noticed the one dad911 mentioned as ultra quiet states a 69dbA rating.

I'm looking for a very small one I can use on my front deck to operate my angle grinder on some of my hobby stuff - so was looking at the smallest they show - this 1 gallon unit. And it boasts a 57dbA rating - even better.

https://www.harborfreight.com/1-gallon-135-psi-ultra-quiet-hand-carry-jobsite-air-compressor-64592.html

I have both cordless and electric angle grinders but they are not as lightweight as the air powered unit, is why I'm interested in going this route.

I already have a larger air compressor in my garage. Just want a very small unit for my deck, which is up higher on the property.

Threads like this one really tend to light a fire under one's butt on making a purchase you weren't planning on so soon....lol......

Doubt you are going to efficiently run and angle grinder with 0.7 cfm. Grinders and sanders love air volume

Actually I only use my air to blow things clean and fill up tires. Blowing things clean is a big part of most of my projects.
Dewalt 20V impact for everything.

I was stunned when mine spun off the lug nuts on the Taco without even skipping a beat. Pleasantly stunned.

If you are considering paint and or media blasting, I think you will need more CFM than the first one listed. I picked up a small cheap oil free compressor years ago and got what I paid for, it's crap. I do have three other oil type. My go to for continuous painting or blasting was 5hp.

Get this one. Mine has lasted over 15 years and I have used air tools-a-plenty and I work it daily. Just step away for a minute and let the compressor catch up if the tool is a hog. You are not starting up a business that requires a 15 CFM compressor. It's a once in a blue moon thing.

Also, as one of the hardcore craftsman here said, always buy a compressor with a belt drive.

Watching youtube mechanic's videos, battery powered seems to be making air obsolete...

Didn't even consider the CFM - thanks for noticing!

Real air power in a garage can't be supplied by a tinker toy compressor. You need CFM and tank capacity , especially for heavy air demand tools like blast cabinet as an example . I have a twin cylinder 60 gallon Ingersoll Rand that I purchased used . It will out live me 😋 . Buy the right tool for the job .

This one is 2.1 cfm aluminum tank on sale for only $10 more at $169. I'm tempted. https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-compressors-tanks/2-gallon-135-psi-ultra-quiet-hand-carry-jobsite-air-compressor-64596.html

Hmmmm I wonder if I could pair 2 through check valves and get 4.2 cfm..... and add a bigger tank.

This was a Harbor Freight compressor.
Damn thing could have killed me. The tanks are thin and poorly designed.

My old inherited compressor started leaking through pinholes in the tank. After convincing myself not to hit those holes with the mig…

My neighbor had an oilless craftsman that was a giant pos. Checked out new compeessors at home depot and harbor freight

I bought a rolair vt25big. A taiwan made version of the makita. Never trips breakers and provides almost enough air to run undercoating gun. Easily runs big framing nailer and is reasonably quiet. Nicely made, no regrets i love it. Just wish it wasnt 110#.
