Just picked this thing up.
Cheap and local!!
Basically a 65 bug on a tube frame.
*Only* needs suspension, steering and brakes.
And carb rebuild, tune up / rebuild depending on leak down results.
And probably ignition.

Going to replace carbs and run it!

Is that an old Chenowith chassis?

Where do you drive those? We drive on sand dunes here.

Had couple of those years ago. Loads of fun.
Looks like a dual port, 1600 or bigger?
40IDFs are plenty for all but the wildest buggy engines
and work great but they aren't cheap.
No swing axle, that's good.
Rear discs, that's also good. Can't tell what's on the front.
IMO just having rear brakes is not good enough.
I learned that one the hard way.
Never liked the oil cooler covering the fan inlet.
Bad idea IMO I'd move it up into the air stream
and let the engine cooling system work.
Then again, It's not mine so ....

Not sure what type of chassis.
Looks very similar to the standard VW sand rail chassis.

Engine checks out so carb rebuild and tune up.
Then new exhaust.
Front end is beat up and worn so have to do something there.
Lots of options.

I have trails on the property.
Will have to widen them up a bit though.
Also 5 minutes from wind rock, royal blue and sunquist parks.
Can legally ride ATVs down the road to get there.

That looks like a stock VW carburetor. It could be one of many models from the looks of the photo. It also appears to have an 009 distributor. Some (most) stock carbs do not play well with the 009, especially if it's a Chinese knockoff 009. If the distributor isn't German, or at least Brazilian, prepare for trouble.
Before you sink any money into a carb rebuild, I suggest doing some research on The Samba about what combinations of carbs and distributors work well together. The carb and distributor system is critical on VW engines. You might be better off with a different carburetor. A Weber 40 IDF is a great carburetor and works with the 009 very well, but it's spendy. Aircooled.Net also has an article on sand rail carburetion, but it doesn't address the carb+distributor system as a whole.

That is a 69 or newer IRS transmission, and other "stock" parts look to be newer model as well. My guess is that he had a 65 title and Vin plate, but everything else is later.
